Better engine diagrams

Hello!
It's been a while.
I still have an 04 3L ranger.
I have beens searching for the transmission fill port which I think is just in front of the firewall and right in front of the driver. (CHILTON does not tell you).
The reason is when I make my first start of the engine of the day, getting into reverse is no problem BUT going forward is.
Thx for any ideas .

Yes. I know about the atf dipstick.
Imagine trying to get a funnel down that. Motor oil has separate filler port for a REASON.

Well, you asked where the trans fill tube is, the engine oil cap is on the right side valve cover, the two are not related.

Just to confirm what 55trucker said - that's definitely the correct fill port. Get a narrow funnel and have fun!

On an automatic the ATF dipstick tube is the "fill port", the only one


On some newer automatics there is no dipstick, there is a port in the bottom of the pan that serves as a "check level" and Fill port

As others said, that is the fill port. There are funnels made specifically for those...
The one I use is metal and has a flexible tail on it so you can avoid obstacles.

The ATF dipstick inscription says, check the level during operating temperature.

When I rebuild the engine, I lost AFT when removing the drive shaft (no body told me). Even funnier, my shop vac actually suck some AFT right out of the dipstick hole! After I fill some AFT back, my reverse after cold start has no power, particularly obvious when reverse up hill. I filled some more, problem fixed. However, it is now quite a bit above the hash marks on the AFT dipstick, contrary to the inscription warning.

"operating temp" and engine RUNNING

Engine must be idling when checking ATF level in any automatic or it will show fluid OVER the hash marks when engine is off because the transmission PUMP is off


And yes, dipstick tube's end is lower than trans fluid level in the pan, so some ATF could be sucked out with shop vac, that's normal

the dipstick tube has been the accepted method to add/fill automatic transmissions since the early 1950s.
try googling/searching transmission fluid funnel.
