I'll be towing a slide in camper right at about the GVWR of my '97 4.0L 4wd (5100 lbs). I'm missing my door sticker, so i'm not sure of the recommended tire pressure; i imagine i'd like to be on the high side with the load. 35 psi or so sound right?

I would go at least 35, yes (40 on the rear if the tires will allow it).

thanks. yeah, i'll be having new tires put on the rear next week. out of curiosity, what's the sticker recommendation?

The factory recommended tire pressures for the vast majority of Rangers over the years is 30F/35R. When I had my Rangers, when empty I'd reverse that though to get better tire wear. With a camper, if the tires you have have a 40 lb max on the sidewall I'd go with that when the camper is in. If you're running over 35 lb on a regular basis you are better off with heavy duty valve stems. Not necessarily the bolt-in units but there are HD rubber ones that will hold in the rim better with higher psi. A regular rubber valve stem, when run at 45 psi or so for a while, will at some point fail or blow out.

Run the max air pressure on the side of the tire. Rubber valve stems are fine to 65psi, then you need to go to the high pressure rubber of metal stems. I prefer metal, the HP rubbers get brital over time and break at the base.
