what motor would be my best bet for reliability and fuel economy with 33's and still have decent power. i know the 4.0 has plenty of power to spare and gets around 21 highway with 31's and 3.73's. So 4.10's and and 33's should be around 19/20 highway which i'm ok with. however i have no reference for any other motors. any input appreciated

the 4.0 is going to be the best bang for your buck with that type of setup, a smaller engine won't be big enough to move it and will use more fuel.

a small cummins diesel would give you quite the improvement, if you were willing to pay the price to buy the parts

x10 on the cummins, but practicality makes me think thats not what you meant. I wouldnt trade my 4.0 for anything in the world. However.......you will not get 19/20 with a 4.0 and 33's, nor do I believe you get 21mpg, lol. mine gets 11-13mpg with my 33's and 3.55's. but i also have over 200k on my motor. But like I said I wouldnt trade my power for mileage for all the 3.slows in the world.

I routinely get 20mpg in my 4.0 Ranger and 18mpg in my 4.0 BII with 4.56's/33"s

4.0 is the bomb.

well my brother has a 97 stx 4.0, ex cab, 5 speed, 4x4 with 3.73 and 31's. he gets like 21 or 22 on the highway and about 17 or 18 around town depending on how stupid he is. we are going to make him a t-shirt that says "Built Ford Tough.... 3 front ends and still going strong!"

and i'm pretty set on the 4.0. i just wasnt sure if there might be anything else worth looking at because its hard to find a 4.0 ranger with everything that i want(ex cab, 4x4, standard, 4.0L, 93-7)

I dont get the whole 4.0 being so much better than the 3.0

I have the 3.0 and its not at all doggy, and my previous vehicles hve all been Heeps with the 4.0 L6

In my truck, 93 Ranger 4x4 5 speed, I have no problem at all power wise, weather its the hills of my small town, off road trails with some gooey mud or the highway pulling a trailer, no problems in the power department, and I have 3.73 open diffs.

I also test drove a 94 Ranger 5 speed with the 4.0. I saw no real noticeable difference other than RPM Shift points, and I attribute that to the rear gearing. Sure the 4.0 is a great motor, and I wouldnt mind having one, but I dont think the 3.0 is bad at all. It pushes my 31's quite nicely ( I know, 31's and 33's are completely different animals, but a re-gear would be just fine)

Believe me, Im not knocking the 4.0, Its a great engine, but I guess Im a little partial to the 3.0.

your heeps with 4.0 are inline 6's not v'6s and totally different motors. different qualitys,

and i guess you could go 5.0, if you got the time, it would be better mileage and power.

You are very correct on that, and I wont bring the Jeeps into this discussion (even though I'm a big AMC Product Fan)

Regardless, I wonder why the 3.0 gets such a bad rep? Not for reliability or maintenance concerns, but for power. Is it really such a dog?

There are arguements for both sides. But my personal opinions the ones who like the 3.0's havent driven the 4.0s but we know thats not true lol. I think its the 3.0 autos that are dogs and have maintenance issues.

i've never had a 3.0 except my brother's sable, but thats no RBV...

my 4.0 gets about 17 in town, with 3.73's and 30's.. thats with me driving her hard.... if i'm nice i get about 22 on the road and 18 in town

and in a couple weeks i'll tell ya what the same thing does with 4.10's!!! lol.

You won't see 19/20 on 33s with an OHV 4.0 and 4.10 gears. I regularly see 11-12 with a 153k 4.0 with 4.10s on 33x12.50s....

I get between 10 and 13.5 in town and going work.

That's with using 4wd when I need it.

This is with a 1998 4.0,ext cab,5 speed,33 inch maxxis bighorns and 3.73 gears. I have aboutt 360 pounds of weight in the back and around 180k on the odom.

Now of im on the highway,2wd crusing I can almost get 16mpg.
