I want duals with the closest to sounding like a v8 I know I'm not gonna get exact but close as possible shops around here say glass packs

If you want the best sound for the 4.0 is the origingal 40 by Flowmaster. Alot of people here use them including myself, but I have a 3.0 and it sounds really good. I owned for a short time and then sold to a friend, in need of a truck a 94 4.0, 5spd ranger and It had 60,000 miles on it when I bought it, used to be a forestry dept truck for CA. I got it and did engine maintence on it and then I changed the whole system from the catback with 2.5" pipe to rear of the tire and installed a original 40 & with a 5spd and healthy engine that 4.0 was strong, fast, the sound from the OG 40 was amazing. I drove it for sometime then my friend bought it from me.

He then put a K&N intake with a cone filter and that 4L even sounded WAY better. I was still able to drive it here and there and heard it from a distance alot and I was happy to hear out that sounded. I only put on a SI/SO 40.

Just remember no V6 will ever sound like a V8 no matter what is done. If you want duals use 2.5" SI/DO OG 40 and use a good pair of 3" tips. Some swear that the super 44 and super 40 sound better, all in all I have heard alot of 4L with different types of exhaust setups after having and working a 4L myself I swear the OG will sound the best on your 4.0.

It's all in suggestions and I am stating mine. I would use the OG 40, but it's your choice. One more thing don't ever put glasspacks on your Ranger it sounds awful, glasspacks don't even make a V8 sound like a V8, it sounds more like a V8 ricer with glasspacks.

it depends on the way there installed on a v8. not a lot of people know but glasspacks are directional. one way they have the corragatd metal with holes to allow the exhaust gas to bounce around and "crackle" another way they are corragated with no holes. either way, glasspacks are loud. there more 50's car mufflers. i recommend magnaflow xl series mufflers for v6's they sound very deep and sound alot like an 8. i have some laying around if you want em. pm me

the first thing that comes to my mind when I hear a V8 with glass packs is a 40 year old rusted out farm truck with a milk crate for a seat.

Standard 40 series or Delta 40 series on the flowmaster?

Standard 40 series or Delta 40 series on the flowmaster?

"OG" or "original" refers to the standard 40 series.

Delta is a bit quieter and lacks the deep resonance of the standard. It would be a good option for a catless vehicle because an exhaust with nothing but pipe and a std 40 is too loud for daily use IMO. If the truck has converters though, I don't see any reason not to go with the standard.

know a cheap website to get a 40 or what about the "knockoffs" i see in all the other threads?

i need single in dual out

also what size pipe should i use..one of the threads in here said that 2.5 might be to big and i would be losing power?

my 93 has true dual super 40s and no cats and i dont think its too loud and thats my daily driver

I wanted the same sound that you say you want. And I got it.

2.5''pipe starting at the y-pipe, goes to a highflow cat, then into a Delta 40 series. Single in dual out, the to 2.5'' tailpipes that are aimed out to the corners.

FYI, the Delta Flow isn't any quieter, it has less resonance. Which means it's quieter in the cab, and it also cuts out that resonating 6cyl sound, AKA ''Honda sound''. My truck is so loud I decided not to put tips on it, to keep it at a somewhat reasonable volume. Yet I still get pulled over for loud pipes.

I've had alot of people that heard my truck idle, ask if it had a 5.0 in it. It's also got that sweet 5.0 tone during shifting.

Also having my pipes angled out, gives it more of an aggressive sound as opposed to the drone of having them straight out the back.

I had dual 2 1/2" SI/SO 40 series Flowmasters on my 3800 Lumina and didn't like them. I just couldn't stand the tinny, high-pitched, "ricy" resonance they made at certain rpms. I took it in to another shop and had dual SI/SO oval case Magnaflow mufflers and polished tips installed, along with a high-flow Magnaflow cat, rear o2 "u-bend" delete and both resonators eliminated. The exhaust is now a little louder and much, much deeper. Amazingly, it is whisper-quiet at freeway speeds, yet still aggressive enough to let you know it's there when you open it up. i've been so floored by the improvements in sound after switching from flowmaster to magnaflow it's the only muffler I recommend for v-6/v-8 applications. Just my .02
