Wanting to do some light off-roading with my 97 ranger. I don't want to put a body lift on it. Any suggestions on an affordable lift kit for this application?

why lift it, just put some 31" or 32" mud tires on and go have fun! lifting is not nessisary to have a good time. I offroaded my stock 2wd for a year before i lifted and put larger tires.

Great tires and just a bit taller then stock is really all you are gonna need for light off roading, Bro. If you have the clearance then you will be fine!!!

I also kinda want the lifted look. So I was thinking along the lines of a body lift.

You are contradicting yourself?

Body lift won't help you offroad unless you run larger tires in conjunction with it.

I say do a washer lift and beltechs plus tires and be done with it.

Or a bodylift and tires.

You gain the lifted look by tires and or true lift, not by a bodylift.

still cheaper than a skyjacker kit and doing the same thing

Not really. Cheaper yes, but it does not do the same thing at all. Either way you'll need to regear from the tire size change.

A body lift doesn't increase suspension travel/flex which is the second purpose of a *lift kit* (the first being bigger tires which gives more clearance).

A bodylift will retain stock suspension travel and ride quality and will allow you to run larger tires which gives more clearance.

But a lift kit does all of the above in conjunction with tires.

Well the wheeling I do is very light. I don't need any extra suspension travel at all so a body lift, at least I think, may be the way to go. Thanks for the help :)

I'd say go up a size on the tires, maybe two. You have the 4.0l, so it would do better with a larger tire than would, say, my measly 2.3l. That being said, if I were you I'd stack some washers under the front coils, and maybe put some lift shackles on the back. Then, I could get the biggest tires I would fit, and go have fun. Honestly, the thing that's so fun about wheeling is pushing your vehicle to its limits. If you have a 4-cyl, 2wd truck (like myself) you can have fun pushing a truck to its limits (which isn't much). Or, if you have a v-8, 2.5 ton military axles, t-case doubler, and 44's, you can still push your truck to its limit, only you've spent a ton of money and just have more impressive limits lol.

Moral: have fun with your truck and when something breaks, replace it with something bigger/stronger.

Thanks I appreciate that last comment. I will do that I already have a leveling kit so I will be putting some 31 inch tires on. Thanks again you really helped. :)

That will make your truck look slightly lifted and perform good. Now add a winch and lockers and you have a pretty capable truck. Maybe add a 1" BL as well, that might actually look pretty good.

Well if you have t-bars then just crank those, that is what I plan on doing to lift mine a couple inches

Looks like his truck was born one year too early to be blessed with the coveted torsion bars.
