had dead cyl #3 no compression. removed head and found bent valve and pushrod. not a lot of carbon in any cylinders headgaskets look good anyone have any ideas what may have caused this before i re-assemble. thanks

Look closely at the piston in question to make sure the valve didn't harm it! When putting it back together use a new valve, valve spring, rockerarm with new riocker ball and also of course a new pushrod. After reinstalling the parts and before you install the valve cover turn the engine over by hand and measure the amount of lift compared to the same rocker on another cylinder..(intake orexhaust wasn't called out in your post.)

in my coworkers truck his valve starved for oil and stuck in the guide. it was bent but went back up was wierd had two valves pointing east and west in the head on the number 1 cylinder. another thing that could have done it is if there is a lot of carbon built up on the valve stem and it stuck in the guide as well.
