Me and my son (12 yrs old) are building a 90 Ford ranger drift truck and need some advice/helpful info. We are going with a NA 6.0 LS engine with a straight cut gear Muncie 4 speed behind it. We are not sure what Bell housing to mate to it for maximum clearance at transmission tunnel and correct clutch size for said engine. The research we have done points to a GM 621 with an 11" clutch set up. We are not sure if there are other options available to us.

Man... I don't have anything to offer here. But might know someone that does...

@bobbywalter

I hate to admit it, but you might have better luck asking that question on a Chevy forum...

BTW, post up some pics. We love project pics around here.

you can use use the 4.8/6.0 flywheel options.

i tend to use the camaro setups 98-02. at least when using the 5.3.

drifting is a little tricky with the older trans in regards to gearing selection. make sure you match your target rpm with the proper gearing for tire height.

there is a step difference on the early 6.0...the all iron one. that can cause issues with bell setup.

we have put the t5 and 435 and ar5 cdoo9 and 40 style....certain toyota and ax15s.....and several others behind the 5.3 and 6.0

damn... sitting here thinking about this i didnt realize how long i have been playing with these things...

did you look at summit and speedway??. we buy stuff from there for our rigs and they have a good knowledge base....american powertrain as well. but they are not as helpful unless spending 12 grand to install in a car you use twice a year is your thing and then spend 12 more to dial it in later....

i am a low budget person.

.

Tech Tip: LS blocks have a rear casting journal with a 7/8 plug. If grease/bread method is used to remove the old pilot bearing, you risk pushing that plug into the pan causing a severe oil leak.

i have gotten away with the grease method several times. so far not tripped up, but i know some that have had issues. also with using the chinesium rear engine covers and main seal issues.

edit again.... if you swap to the hydro setup get the remote bleed kit for sure and get at least a 24 inch line.....30 is better.

take your time measuring the offset.... i have used the ranger master with a an adapter on a t56 application before but we did mod the throw on it....but it was converting to a manual from an auto and using a rjm pedal. i assume you are starting with a stock manual truck.

We are going with a cable set up so he can feel the clutch better, like on his dirt bike.

We started to go with the BMW trans, but decided to go with the Muncie straight gears with sequential shifter. This is our first attempt at building a drift truck, we will use this truck as a test prototype.

the bmw stuff makes wicked power but hella dollar.

the LS/gen3 is definitely one of my favorite engine platforms but shows its weakness in the drift world. pay attention to oil flow and do the basic maintenance and get an accusump if you are going to rev the shit out of it.

the 6.0 with the right cam, 5500-6500 can work pretty good. i am guessing you are shooting for 400-450 wheel.

We are shooting for 400, for now. I appreciate all of the helpful advice and information. We are going with a 6.0 out of a boat, so it's designed to hold high rpms, hopefully, lol. We are new to this style of racing, my son did pro karting for 7;yrs.
