Beating a Dead Horse

My Ranger

You can see how nice it looks. I should have looked beyond the shiny paint.
Now it will be mine for a long time. LOL

It amazes me the number of people who buy used vehicles without first checking them out. After they've owner it a while all the problems start poping up one at a time. Now it's no longer because the vehicle's previous owner did not take proper care of it...no, now it's because the car is a "insert make and model here."

It sounds to me like you have done just about everything already. Would not make much sense to sell it now? But, only you can make that decision.

There are more than a few of us who do our own mechanical work, yes all of it, and have over a couple hundred thousand miles on our vehicles. There is always a lemon in the bunch, but this seriously sounds like lack of care.

The clutch hit me from left field.

Honestly, it shouldn't have. I'm not too good with metric, but if I did the math right 250,000 klicks is just about 100,000 miles. That is right about the end of the line for most clutches. Either the slave goes bad (as in your case, and in my last clutch) and once you take the trans out you really might as well put a kit in it, or the disc has worn to the point that it starts to slip (as with my Chevy) and you should do the whole setup while you are in there again anyway.

Actually the conversion is .62 Kms to the mile. That would put it at about 155,000 miles. You are absolutley right. I now realize that the truck was past a lot of it's normal life expectancy on parts. I though because of the 5 years of highway miles it might be not as bad. I guess miles are miles. You can see by the shape of my truck why I though it would be a good buy.

Yes thanks for that. I do as much as I can. I do agree. I was a little upset and down with the Ranger and probably Ford as well But in light of what was said I really have to look at the mileage, and what I now have. I guess it is a testament to the durability of the Ranger if the parts lasted this long.
I really would point out that we have some pretty hard winters and the highways are heavily salted. This truck had mostly highway and for it to be in this shape body wise shows my nephew kept good care of it. The axles are probably damaged by sanding and salting of the highways. I am not sure if many of you guys have to put up with that where you live.

Congrats on your new truck :icon_cheers:

I had to replace the master cylinder and do a small tune up when I got mine...lets not forget the wasp nest in the tailgate from the PO letting it sit for months on end..

Two years later it runs like a top...albeit a very slow one :)

Looks like you got all your bases covered. By the way, welcome to TRS.

Thanks for that. I am very happy to be here and from my previous experience with other forums I am soaking up as much as I can. It has been a long time since I was excited about working on a project. it may have sounded negative at first but I actually really like my little truck.

No need to apologize. Almost all of us have gotten frustrated and thought about selling our trucks (or in Chance's case thrown it in the crusher). I really don't think you are gonna run into too many more "major" issues. You've replaced almost all of it already anyway:icon_rofl:.
