Beating a Dead Horse

They also have a a bearing that reloctaes on the shaft and has the seal with it.

You beat me to the speedi-sleeve post. Those things work great. I'm surprised your mechanic wouldn't have done that before making you shell out for new axles.

Some guys would rather sell a axle shaft for a couple hundred bucks rather than speedi-sleeve for maybe $40...

In the States the trade in value for that truck is about $2,100. I am not sure what you paid for it or what the trucks sell for in Canada and I don't know if you are talking Canadian money or American money...........that being said as posted above you should be all set once you take care of the repairs and maintenance.........next time post your questions before you buy the truck or get it repaired and someone will help you. get a good slave cylinder I think LUK is the oem and I have heard good things about raybestos

Thanks guys for the heads up about the speedy sleeve . I will ask him next time I am around. His feeling was that they were pretty bad and he showed me then. He said in his experience they just end up tearing up the seals and you have to do it all over again.
How long would a "speedy sleeve" last?
I just got it back and it is running like a dream. I hope for a long time. OH and I mentioned what I had done to the truck already and the guy said that the blower fan resistors are bad in chevies as well. Of course this is my first used street vehicle in almost 20 years so I have had little maintenance other than oil and filters in that time. Anything else was covered by warranty.

The truck was going to get 1500 as a trade in Canadian dollars. I really didn't have time to research the vehicle. I only found out about it a week or so before it was to be traded. It had been about 6 weeks for him to get his truck because of the options he wanted on the new one.
The parts that were used on the clutch was a LUK kit. They turned the flywheel and drained the trans and found it to be the what looked like the original fluid. So now it has fresh clean oil to work with.
I have a 1 year warranty on the job. They said there was not much metal on the drain plug so that was a positive, and it always shifted well.
Fingers crossed.

you should be all set with the LUK equipment.........make sure they put Mercon/Mercon V in the tranny. I think you got a great price on the purchase "$1,500" but it sounds like you got tucked for the repair costs "over $4,000". next time you have an issue post it here first and we can help out....best of luck with it............change the coolant out.

Coolant: LOL. I was just saying to my wiife that is about the only fluid that hasn't been changed or topped up in the vehicle. That is my next project.
The price was right. It came with a camper cap, bed liner, a set of rails and some pretty recent tires. I figure if I get a couple of years out of it I will be quite happy.

Just a reminder to you guys in the states. North of the border, parts are much more expensive, sometimes three times the price. Regardless of make or model.

I understand your frustration. Buying a used vehicle can be a toss up unless you are somehow able to tear it apart and inspect it before you buy it. Then you have to replace all of these parts and feel like it was a bad buy.

It sounds like it just didn't have a lot of maintenance done to it before you bought it, and with you being picky you figured out everything it needed as soon as you drove it for a bit. The same thing has happened to me with every used ATV I have ever bought. It seems decent when you load it up and drive home with it, then all of the chassis bearings start grinding and you end up tearing the entire thing down and rebuilding and replacing every bearing, sandblasting and powder coating the frame.

200k is pretty good for a clutch, as well as everything else you replaced. At least you now have the piece of mind that most of the major wear items have been replaced.

as i posted earlier I definably don't know what the prices or exchange rate in canada is. that being said if the price of news cars is close to the states you should all be buying new cars.ie. In the states you can buy a brand new Toyota corolla, auto, A/C, pw, pl for under $14,000. You will not have to repair anything for 5 years on it........it appears the OP paid over $4,000 for 2 ballpoints, front brakes, 2 axle seals and a clutch......

If you convert it, 200,000 KM's is around 125,000 miles. So in reality, you have really just hit the maintenence point for the items you have had to replace. Most ball joints do need replacing around that point in time, as well as brakes. Depending on how it was driven, I could definatly see it needing a clutch as well.

I think that since you have now gotten all of those issues sorted, you should have a great running truck that will last for years to come.

I know what you mean about buying used vehicles though. Everything looks great until you go for the safety inspection. I just went through it here, and I think I put out around $200 to bring everything up to specs. That is doing all the work myself however. Could have easily been $1000 if someone else did the work.

Stewie, these trucks are reliable when kept up right, just like any vehicle. You have a truck that has been abused a little bit, and I would fear for the oil change maintenance history by the previous owners, too.

I am also in agreement regarding the ball joints & the rear axles.

All cars & trucks have issues and imperfections...which ones can YOU live with? I think I'll stick with my Ford Ranger.

Good luck, and hope you stick with your $4,500+ investment! :-)

Pete

If you had to replace the axle shafts on that truck, it was beat on. Most Ford's in the last 15 to 20 years aren't that bad. My 87 served 12 years with my dad using and abusing it hard and it still has most of it's original front end parts, in working order, and doesn't need much to be in near perfect mechanical condition.

I'd say your nephew has beat the piss outta that truck (my professional opinion as a mechanic), but I agree with the general trend of this thread. Once you get it fixed it should be a good reliable truck that will last a long time if taken care of.

better idea: dont buy used ford rangers a teenager with no brains and no idea how to drive drove. mine was lady owned before me and i have 0 problems.

Ok I guess a little clarification is due. Number one I said over 200,000 KMs more like over 250,000 kms. I am retired so my nephew is 40. The truck wasn't beaten on, it was used for highway driveing 5 days a week 100 mile round trip. It was also used for camping and pulling a light camper trailer. When I bought the truck I knew I would have to do some repairs. The bulk of the repairs were done when I took it in for the mandatory safety check. Everything that needed to be done was because of that.
It is like they are holding a gun to your head. You either get the repairs done or you don't drive it. The bulk of the repairs are for parts. As one poster mentioned parts in Canada are usually pretty high. We don't have the sources you guys do in the US. We are pretty much using Ford Motorcraft parts from the dealer. So far it has been 2750 in parts including taxes. We pay 13% tax on everything. I have done some of the work and I saved myself 80 dollars a flat rate hour. Most of the repairs are beyond my talents and equipment.
I was ok with the orginal repairs because I knew I would have few worries. A lot of the repairs I did to have a baseline for future maintenance. The clutch hit me from left field.
Thanks for all the reassurances but don't bash my nephew, he is a good guy who works hard for not a lot of money. He kept the truck really clean and had finally got enough money to buy a new truck. So I guess he let the maintenance slide for the last year.
Thanks again guys.
