BASS ACKWARDS ENGINE SWAP !

i cannot find anyone who has come up with this situation; I have a bunch of Rangers, always acquiring and letting them move on later. I currently have a 98 standard cab 2wd 3.0 5 speed manual base model Ranger. It has 494,000 km (over 300,000 miles) reading on the odometer, and never having been a fan of the orphan, dead end 3.0 engine, want to remove it before it becomes a paperweight. Curiously enough, a while back I DID get it's adopted SHO 3.0 V6 cousin for this exact swap scenario, knowing it was going to happen eventually, but I sold the engine later.
Anyways, I just finished parting out a very nice 87 2.9 5 speed that had catastrophic electrical issues, and I know harnesses can be swapped, we needed ALL it's parts more than another project.
My question is can I swap the 2.9 and transmission into the '99 ?
AND while we're on the subject, the 4.0 OHV V6 in my 1997 5 speed 2wd daily driver has blown the head gasket at around 450,000 km.
IF the 2.9 and trans won't work in the 99, would it work in the 97 ?
I also have access to a 4.0 SOHC for free from a '06 Mustang. Timing chains are good, but due to a faulty radiator cap, it overheated and blew the head gasket (we hope, because it still ran). No electronics with it or the 2.9.
I have been told the Mustang 4.0 SOHC is a different block then the Ranger 4.0 SOHC ?

You would have a much eaiser time putting the 2.9 in the 97 then the 99.

Either is possible with the wireing harness, but the 99 will need motor mounts and the trans changed.

Im not aure how the 2.9s wiring will work with the newer gauges either

Theoretically, its possible to run a 2.9 with a 4.0 pcm, etc.

I've wanted to try this, still haven't had the chance.

If you dont have emissions testing, just get a standalone and run whatever you'd like.

go REALLY backwards and put a flathead in from a 8N ford- and 4.56 gears. then go to jiffy lube for a oil change, and watch for the reaction.

I know, our 8N had a backhoe & loader on it, guess you could always drop the bucket as a brake. Dad has a ‘46 2N also with a sherman step-up, not as fast as the 8N , think it tops out at 18mph.
