Nope, that 86 flexplate will be a 50 oz/in, you need a 28 oz/in for a 70 302. As for the C5's they were in production during the transition from the 28 to 50 oz cranks(1980-84?) , as such, they can have either balance weight. The transition was sometime in 81-82 for the change in cranks.

So I could have used the flex plate that was between my 302 and C4 that was originally in my 70 Mustang... in the Ranger?

I doubt it. Most(all I think actually) Mustang C4's had 157 tooth bells. C5's all had 164 tooth bells. Unless someone replaced the Stang's original transmission with a big bell C4, it'll have a 157 tooth flexplate and bell.

Old 302 to C5 flex plates

I called Oriely's autoparts and they reccomended to contact their vendor, Pioneer Automotive. I told the tech guy what I was after and he gave me the following part numbers:
FRA203 157 tooth 28oz counterbalance
FRA205 164 tooth 28oz counterbalance
We didn't talk about bolt patterns but I did give him the details of the engine and transmission. I'll be picking both of these dudes up tomorrow and returning which ever I don't need. Better to have and not need, than need and not have.
