Balance wiights of flywheels/flexplates/dampeners

Well, I stuck it in the wrong area for one thing, meant to put it up in the "Post good info links here" section up top. Did find it interesting that the balance weights for the 28/50 oz flexplates are almost the same size. It's the distance from center of rotaton that makes the difference.

Then you've misunderstood what he was illustrating. In the text, he clearly stated that there's a big difference between the size of a 28 vs 50 oz weight, in the same size flywheel/flexplate. Now a 50 oz weight on a 164 will be closer in size to a 28 on a 157 in comparing flexplates.

Well, I did understand that but I sure didn't say it right did I! I was kind of headed in the right direction when I mentioned the distance from rotation being the big difference.

I mistakenly used the 5.0HO flexplate between my 1970 302 and C5. Didn't know there was a difference at the time. Now it's got a weird pulsing vibration. I'm minimizing the driving that I do in it, but other than my motorcycle and motorhome, it's all I've got. I can't remember if the bellhousing is removable and if it is, I don't know what it cam from or if it's oem. I have looked in the FAQ and tech articles but still haven't gotten a clue exactly what flexplate I need. I'm guessing one for a C4 would do the trick? I'll keep looking but if someone could tell me specifics like make, model, year, or better yet what brand and P/N of plate to get. I'd buy ya some beers! Guinness if ya like!

I'm 40, so old enough to know I don't know eveything, but I do know when to ask the good ol guys who do. Thanks.

I try to use catalogs as on-line quick references. Here are Summit’s 302 flexplates. The second link has Summit is showing that a 28 oz is for earlier 302’s.

From what I have read elsewhere, every time you crank your engine the bearings are tearing themselves apart with the 50 oz new style balancer.

You still need to find out how many teeth you are running. I guess if you had a junkyard close by you could buy a copy of each to minimize teardown time.

You need a 28oz/in flexplate, but the size (157 or 164 tooth) depends on the bellhousing. If your transmission dipstick tube goes directly into the transmission case just behind the bell, it's a 157 tooth. If the dipstick tube goes into the pan, it's a 164 tooth. But you say it's a C5, then it should be a 164 tooth bell, if it's a V8 C5, the 80's V8 C5's all had 164 tooth bells

Thanks, that narrows it down. My plan is to get both from an auto parts store and return the one I don't need. Does the C5 have the same torque converter bot pattern as a C4? I need to search by year make and model of vehicle. Happen to know what vehicles came with a C5 and V8?

Same bolt pattern for all 164 tooth flexplates, even those for the FMX and AOD's. The C-5 was a 1980's upgrade of the C-4, the difference is the addition of a lockup converter and the plumbing to control it. The torque converter and bell housings are 1" longer (deeper) than those on a C-4. It was only produced for a couple years in the early 80's.

Are the c-5 any better, worse or the same as the c-4. I like the idea of a lock up t.c.

It's the same transmission, only with a lockup converter. You can rebuild a C-5 into a C-4, but not the otherway around as far as I know.

Jesus, so many variables. I pulled my 70 302 out of my 70 Mustang that I put an 86 AOD in. Can I use that flex plate? Will that 1" depth difference be an issue? Eventually I want to rebuild and adapt the AOD into this truck, just can't do it right now. Seems that the vehicles that had the C5 originally had the 50oz balance.

Nope, that 86 flexplate will be a 50 oz/in, you need a 28 oz/in for a 70 302. As for the C5's they were in production during the transition from the 28 to 50 oz cranks(1980-84?) , as such, they can have either balance weight. The transition was sometime in 81-82 for the change in cranks.
