Bad Valves?

If a mechanic says a set of valves can't be correctly reground because whoever did the last valve job 'tumbled' the valves. What does that mean?

Not sure what that means in relation to the last valve job, but the translation probably means 'you need to replace the heads'.

Squish and tumble are references to fluid/air movement in a combustion chamber, not sure on his reference to valves in this case.

If you trust him then have him replace the valves and seats(if needed), if you have doubts then takes the heads to another shop for a 2nd opinion.
Any professional, in any field, that is insulted by 2nd opinions is not worth dealing with, ever.

And I have always liked this quote: "If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough"

The opposite of: "If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with Bull Sh!t", lol

Ask mechanic what "tumbled" means, if he can't explain it in simple terms that make sense to you then HE doesn't understand it....take heads elsewhere.

I'm guessing as a way to clean the valves, the previous repair included placing the valves in a tumbler (vibratory or mechanical) and it took the valves out of spec. Get new valves.

Thanks guys.

I think Andy is correct. Anyhow I'll see the mechanic today and check back in.

While I am not certain either I think Andy may be on to something. Valves are sensitive things, and if one is not ground just so it can be made unusable. Even a minor nick in the stem caused using set up on the machine can ruin a valve.

On the bright side good quality valves are like a buck a piece, and if you are having them ground anyway replacing them should add nothing to the repair labor-wise since it is no extra work.

Stopped in the shop and met with the mechanic.

Andy was pretty much right. The valves had all been quickly cleaned in a tumbler because it's easier and cheaper but it left the stems pitted and scarred to the point they would chew up any new seals and trying to smooth them out would take them out of spec. The valves themselves had been ground at least once leaving very little material leftover.

A set of new valves is on order.
