I worked on my Ranger again today and put new plugs in. Now at idle instead of just going up and down it just dies most of the time. When I got home I tried tapping on the MAP and TPS with the handle of a screwdriver to see it changed anything, when I tap on the IAC right away it idles much worse and almost dies. I rev it up some and it smooths out and it gets bad again when I tap on the IAC. Its the original (148,000) and I have cleaned it out once and it helped some.

well with that miles on the clock, yes the AIC certainly could stand a good cleaning.

remove, the AIC spray it down with some carb cleaner, to remove the carbon build up that is on the small shaft in side repeat as necessary... this needs to be able to move, when it isn't able move then that is why the idle gets erratic, er' one of the reasons anyway. they can take alot of cleaning...but sometimes they reach a point where it is just better to get a new one.

couldn't hurt to check the other vacuum ports on the upper intake as well, to clear them from carbon. there is a smaller port just behind the throttle plate, on the body itself...make sure that is clear too...

couldn't hurt to run code and see if you have any other issues going on.

certainly couldn't hurt to check the TFI (or ignition module), remove it and test at your local/ favorite parts store...be sure to run the test several times, at least 3.

getting fuel pressure readings would be good too.

In an earlier post I mentioned that I took it to a shop and it had no codes and everything checked out. They spent 4 hours and could find nothing wrong,he said the computer was working fine and the fuel pressure was good. I did clean the IAC once but not really well. I also sprayed out the vacume ports for the MAP and the FPR and when I first got it cleaned out the throttle body with cleaner so I know that little port is clean.
