I recently baught a set of 33x12.5x17 mickey thompson baja claws for my 99 ranger. I have a 3" body lift on it and am wondering what the best backspacing for these tires would be. For the most part ive found both 8" and 9" wide rims with about 4" or 4.5" of backspacing. Id really like to minimize rubbing with these tires. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

With that you are probably going to need 3.75in. of backspacing with a 10in. wide wheel. if you put too wide a tire on too narrow a rim it will wear out the middle of the tread. You might also have to take off the mudflaps in front and trim the fender since you don't have too much lift on it. 4.5in of backspacing is how much your stock rims have.

10" wide wheel is TOO wide. A 12.50 works best on an 8"

When aired down the 10 will pop beads easily

I disagree, you can run a 12.5 wide tire on a 8" wide wheel or a 10" wide wheel but in my experience they work best on a 10" wide wheel

I take it you never air down for trails then. a 10" rim exposes the wheel to damage and pops off the bead much easier when at trail air pressures. Out of several hundred people who use their rigs on the trails with 12.5 tires only 1 or 2 have 10" rims

On an 8" rim you will have to keep them at a lower pressure to keep the contact patch flat. Otherwise they will most probably ride on the center tread only. Not too good for street.

I personally run a 10" rim. I do street and fast dirt, not really trails.

Well, I think wut it should come down to is what are you going to be doing are you goin to be doin trails where you need to air them down or is it goin to be seeing pavement alot with occasional offroad use where you won't be airing it down...

Most manufacturers start at 7 or 7.5 in wheel and go up to 10 as a max size. IM a big believer in going with the smaller rim. tires tend to wear better from my experience of 30 years running oversized tires. At this point I would probably never run a tire that wide anyway. I have found on 98% of the situations I have run into. A 10.5 or so have served me much better.

if using for trail riding then yes i will agree, just sayin in general for street use a 10" wheels works well, if you do alot of wheel where you are running lower air pressures i agree 100%, just depends what your using them for

8" wheel with 3.25-4" BS is about perfect and no rub.

10" wheel with 4" BS is about perfect and very little to no rub. Any lower backspace, you risk fender rub.

The whole 8 or 10" wheel on a 12.50 tire debate is kinda finny to me. Yeah, 8" will wear a little bit more in the middle compared to the 10"...but the difference would be almost unnoticeable in the long term so long the tires are filled to plant a fat patch. Whether that's 34 for 10" and 32 for 8". Get what I'm sayin?

fwiw...I run 10's and 12.50's and in the winter when I trailride, I'm down to 10 and sometimes 8psi without any sort of lock. And I used to be a 10" hater til I bought tires on rims that fit my truck.

Oh yeah....

DONT FORGET PICS WHEN THEY'RE ON!!!!

well ive been looking around and still havent found wheels with the correct back spacing. Id like to go the steel wheel route cause i have a 5 speed swap along with a manual transfer case coming soon. I found the pro comp 52 series wheels in 17x8" with 4.25 backspacing and 17x9 with 4.5, they also make a 2.5" backspace wheel in both sizes also. Im thinking the 2.5 is too small and ill risk fender rub. Would the 4.25's with a 1/4 wheels spacer be my best route or does anyone know of a company that makes cheap wheels with the correct size back spacing?
