I was on the Forum about 10 years ago. Still own an 88 Bronco II. Recently moved from Western New York to The Black Hills of South Dakota. I'm experiencing performance issues (2.9L) due to the high elevation and high temperatures. I'm starting of thinking of a performance upgrade or a later engine swap. My BII is a 5-speed, manual transfer case manual hub XL model. I did completely overhaul the 2.9 about 4, 000 miles ago. Help appreciated very much!

Yes, no normally aspirated engines like altitudes above 2,000ft, they sell lots of Turbo charged vehicles in those areas

And high temps mean even thinner air so double whammy in that respect

Also the TFI spark system hates any heat so does poorly overall when temps climb

A 4.0l OHV swap allows you to keep the same trans and motor mounts so not a hard swap mechanically
Only 20 more horse power but 50ft/lb more torque which would be the point of this swap
1990-1994 4.0l with computer from manual trans Ranger would be easiest swap
Need the "Y" pipe for exhaust

These came with the M5OD-R1 manual transmissions which would be a much better trans than you have now
