Axle width

A buddy has an 83 Ranger with a 7.5 rear axle.

How much wider are 8.8 axles from Rangers and Exploders of different years?

I read Exploder axles are 1.5" wider, but is that 1.5" wider PER side for a total of 3 inches, or only .75" per side for a total of 1.5 inches?

'90-'92 Ranger 8.8s would be the same width as the '83 (56.5").

'93up Ranger axles are 58.5" (2" wider)

Explorer 8.8s ('91-'01) are 59.5" (3" wider).
