Why is it everytime i call for parts for the front axle on my 97 , they ask me if it has a Dana 28 or a 35 ? Didnt they stop with the 28 in 1990 ? or am i mistaken , it just irks me a little

they did, but the store system doesn't know that. most of those parts are assigned ranges rather than specific years in the parts store computer, so even though your truck is 7 years older than the last D28, that still show it. they won't find parts for a 97 with a D28, but eh, gotta ask.

There was a D35 case with 28 guts for a few years after 90, but I think that died with the 2.9.

There is a "D28" in '93-'97 trucks, it's known as the "hybrid" D28/35. What's quite funny though is if you actually have this axle and tell the dude so (these days he's likely just a slave for the computer), you will never ever get the right parts for your truck (aside from parts actually inside the differential itself). If you need anything else (brake rotors, wheel bearings, seals, ball joints, anything outside of the diff housing), you must "lie" to him and tell him you have the actual D35, as the D28 selection in their computers will always result in parts for the old non-hybrid D28, which went bye-bye in 1990.

what trucks have the hybrid , or is it just a lottery basically

Most 93-97 4cyl and 3.0L got the hybrid. Anything with a 4.0L got the real deal D35.

If it has ribbs on the bottom of the aluminum housing its a true d35, if its smooth its a hybrid d35/28.

i figured the 4.0's got the true 35 , what hubs would a 94 4 cyl use it if has the hybrid ?

Everything except the carrier, gears and inner axle shafts is the same on a Hybrid.

Same hubs, u joints, outer shafts, wheel bearings etc.
