Has anyone tried the AVM manual hubs on their '98-'00 Ranger? Is it a difficult install? My vacuum-actuated hubs are still working fine on my '99, but with every passing year I'm more worried they will eventually fail. I'm wondering if it's better to go with the manual hub fix (as shown on the tech page of this forum), or to go with the AVM hubs.

I also have a 99. I have done the cheap fix because my vacuum hubs where not working. I have a set of the avm hubs sitting in my garage and plan on putting them on the first chance I get. I cut the screen out of the hub cover and am worried about getting dirt in the hub--right now I have a piece of duct tape over the holes--very nice looking. If mine where not broken I wouldn't worry about it. If you have some extra money lying around you could buy them for insurance.

The install is very simple. Remove the old disconnects, put on the new oring supplied with the AVM hubs, and pop on the hubs. You're done and good to go. The hardest part is probably taking the old hubs off, however there is a write up in the tech section on how to do it.

So you don't need to do anything to plug the vacuum lines going to the old hubs?

What are the AVM hubs and where do you get them?

Nevermind...found this:

AVM Locking Hub Set For 1997 - Early 2000 Ford Rangers With Vacuum Actuated Hubs (Will Not Work With Live Axles)

Part Number: 15001.70
Manufacturer: AVM Brand Rugged Ridge Name
They are constructed of Military spec hardened nylon center dial that will not damage other parts in unlikely event of a failure. AVM is the actual Brazilian company that manufactures the locking hubs for Superwinch, therefore you can rest assured that you will get the top quality products. * Ultra reinforced nodular iron body * Salt-spray tested epoxi enamel finish * Die cast aluminum cap. for Corrosion resistant- glossy finish * Internal components: Precision machined, heat treated * Premium classic design and durability... full metal cap and body * Better fuel economy... because there's less drag on your engine * More miles from your front tires... since they rotate freely. Also allows you to steer more freely in turns * More comfortable ride... steering is lighter, and there is less tendency to shimmy; drivetrain noise and vibration is also reduced * Better 4WD... performance when the hubs are locked. Works in reverse and compression braking. No slippage or partial engagement / disengagement problems

i got my avm hub about a year ago and they work great. but check your wheel bearings regularly to make sure they are in good shape and also make sure your cv's are in good shape or else they will fail like mine. as for the installation all you need is a couple of flat head screwdrivers and i small rubber mallet to tap them on. and the vacuum lines i capped mine off and unplugged the vacuum actuator in the left wheel well so they are sealed so no moisture or dirt can get in there.

Hello i have a 1998 automatic ford ranger with vacuum hubs. I would like change it over to manual hubs. Im planning on getting avm manual hubs and i was curious is there anything i need to do other than just put the new hubs on since my truck is an automatic.
