Aux In Mod Question

This mod came up a few times while I was searching around for an aux in mod for my 02 Ranger with a stock head unit. However, I am clueless as to what exactly the mod creator did. I see three wires; I'm guessing two go to the left/right speaker out and a third is being used to switch to the aux in. However, I don't know where he soldered these wires and how he installed a switch. Any ideas?

Also, is it true that if you press CD twice on this head unit and it displays "NO CD DJ," then you have an aux in?

Thanks!

Your deck is set up for an aux cd player. Meaning a 6, 10, 12 or however many disc player.

Buy an aftermarket stereo, modding the factory one gets rid of the radio...

This may not be relevant, but a my friend's dad modded the factory stereo in his '95 Explorer Limited so it had an aux input. I know he took the dash apart and spent hours doing it, but it works well and is clean.

How can I take advantage of this with respect to the mod I linked to?

By this, do you mean that this mod will disrupt/break the normal function of the radio? Any recommendation as far as head units go? Anything I do to my truck is on a tight budget (college student), which is why I wanted to explore this mod. If I decide to break down and buy a new head unit, do you have a preference to brand/model that is somewhat inexpensive, yet not too chinsey?

Thanks for the replies!

According to the site you linked to the author said the radio function becomes the AUX in, so basically you lose AM/FM.

I personally like JVC head units, mine were $200 installed (I have one in my Dakota and explorer), mainly because it also has HD radio and it's satellite, iPod, bluetooth, ect, ready.
Here's the stripped down version of mine that still has the AUX input for $65.

those both say 20w rms x 4, what are the chances they are both pushing that out? just wondering.

also, it may be a noob question but here it goes: the whole HD radio thing, do you sign up for a service or something? or does it just make regular radio sound better if you buy that first HU?

how does the bluetooth work? with like a bluetooth connector w/ ipod? or what

also, how many pre-amp outputs do both of these have?

$99 from Crutchfield, about $80 on eBay. Comes with an iPod adapter, front USB and AUX in, and 6 pre-outs if you want an amp.

nice lookin HU... it's definitely a possibility for me.
do you have personal experience with the HU?

with the 6 channels... could this be divided up between:
1) two dash speakers
2) two door speakers
3) two subs?

does that cover your 6 channels? (again, sorry i know it's a noob question lol)

just didn't know if each channel means a pair of speakers, or just one.

No personal experience, but it's the one I'm planning to throw in mine when I can swing it. Reviews are very good everywhere I've checked. 6 channels are left and right for f/r/s channels.

actually hahnsb2 i beleive he disabled the cd function of the radio and not the am/fm part, from what i read, he basically just "unplugged" the cd player and wired in a male headphone jack, i could be wrong but that is what it sounds like to me which is very creative and seems simple.

I honestly don't know, I'm not a big audio person, 4 good speakers is enough for me...
HD radio is free. How it works is some stations will broadcast another signal that is a different format. Here there's 94.7 HD1 which is an alternative station, 94.7 HD2 is all local bands. There's a few others such as Top40 station that has an HD2 broadcast of nothing but comedy. It really depends on where you live. The HD signal seems so come in clearer than regular stations.
The bluetooth I believe is for a bluetooth phone to connect so you can dial and talk using your radio/speakers but I'm not 100% positive.
The iPod adapter actually hook up using the iPod data port so you can control the iPod through the stereo instead of having to control the iPod itself when it's just hooked up to the AUX in, it also charges it.

OK, I must have misread it.

I agree on the aftermarket head unit. The stock one that was in my 03' (its sitting in a box somewhere) in my opinion was junk, radio came in much more clearly than the CDs and it still wasn't that great. I put in a $100 Sony head unit and the stereo sounds a lot better plus I have line in.
