You guys seem to be the best guys to ask this.

my dad has a 2007 ford ranger sport RWD with a 4.0l engine and an automatic transmission.

anyways, the computer threw a P0720 code, and the truck won't shift into drive or reverse. it can be shifted into 1st and second, though.

so anyways, the output speed sensor was replaced, the bands and stuff were checked, so we seem to think it's the actual wiring harness, but there's no room to get at it without dropping the transmission.

is there a way that you can get at it without dropping the transmission, and could it be another issue that we can check?

You can pull the harness up into the engine bay if you unplug everything at and around the trans. Unfortunately that isn't one of the easier diagnostics to do without a scanner that will do live data.

I saw a couple of TSBs about Ford code P0720 for 2007 model year

Google: Ford TSB P0720 2007

Looking up TSBs by DTC for the 2007 Ranger none show up.

is there any particular scanner you would reccommend for this? preferibly one that can be bought at a canadian retailer

Heh, all the ones I can think of that do transmission PIDs are not in the price range for the average Joe.

IDS is the best, but you kinda have to at least work at a Ford dealership to buy it.

Snap-On Verus or Solus would be next on my list, but those are a couple thousand dollars each.

Some of the Genysis systems might do it, they are north of $500.

If you have a smart phone you could try the Torque app, it might do what you need. You just need to buy the bluetooth OBDII adapter.
