We worked on my sons ranger all day today fixing things here and there. One of the items we fixed was the automatic transfer case. It had a bad switch and relay and while we were at it we put a newer motor on the transfer case. This truck is a 90 that we bought a couple weeks ago knowing something was wrong with the fourwheel drive. After fixing the automatic 4x we've found it grinds fairly hard when engaging in low. Is that common with these automatic 4x?

Are you coming to a complete stop and shifting into neutral or using the clutch before trying to change gear ranges?

Like he said, come to a complete stop and put the transmission in neutral to shift to 4 low. 4 high can only shift on the fly below 20 mph Is my understanding.

Complete stop with truck in neutral. Doesn't sound smooth like a manual transfer case. Sounds like it grinds when it goes into gear.
