Transmission
Automatic
the problem I have is the truck won't move in o/d. If I put it in revers 1,and 2 it works.
A little back ground. 4 years ago the trans went out of my 95 4.0 4x4, had it rebuilt so it has 0 miles on it. It got really cold that winter had lots of trouble getting the trans and torque converter lined up. motor went bad on me. A few months ago finally had some money to spend bought a 98 explorer sport with a 4.0 x code motor. the motor runs fine apart from an oil leak and an exhaust leak. the exhaust leak is no big deal I just haven't gotten the system tight yet.

I think someone posted on here; that the trans pump is easy to screw up when you install the transmission. How likely is it to be I messed up the trans pump, and is there an easy way to check it. Like removing a coolant line from the radiator etc.
More back ground at some point the shaft that runs through the pump got out of alignment, and was pressed into the planetary gears. Don't know when this happened but it is the main reason I had so much trouble getting the trans installed properly. It wasn't till I looked at the trans out of the 98 that I realized there should not be any shaft showing. So I took the shaft and the planetary gear set out of the front of the 98 trans and put them in the other one and put everything back together and this is were I am at now.

So you bolted the toque up to the engine and then tried to install the trans?

4 years ago when I had the trans rebuilt, I had all kinds of trouble getting the trans bolted back up. I would get everything lined up but after bolting up the trans would be unable to rotate the engine over, so i would pull the trans out and start over. I have since learned that the inner shaft at some time got out of alignment with the planetary gears and was sticking about 1/2 inch out farther than it should have. So that was part of the problem. It is also possible that 4 years ago I did not get the torque converter in all the way. Recently a member said that if that happens you could damage the pump.
Now I am trying to determine if that is what happened because, I have a trans I can get parts from but I would like to know if this could be the problem before I pull the pump off of it and give it a try.

So I took the top trans coolant line loose from the radiator, so I could see the fluid flow. I then put the back end up on jack stands. Good flow in reverse, neutral, and 2nd. No fluid in 1st or D. However with the back tires up and no load on them the transmission turned and shifted. So now I am fairly sure its the trans pump. If I am wrong please let me know. I am dropping the trans again tomorrow and robing the pump of the other trans I have since as near as I can tell they are the same.

Realized I left something out as far as issues on this project.
As I stated before the Truck has been sitting for four years or so. Now when I put the old radiator on something interesting happened. Water went from the radiator into the trans. Now like me you are probably thinking that is impossible. See I flushed the radiator before install and then hooked up the hoses and before putting water in it the trans lines. So apparently there is a leak inside the radiator. Flushed the trans new fluid new filter, and new radiator hoses and everything. Now there is apparently sill water in the fluid so I am going to drain it again before I put the other trans pump on, and again new fluid and another new filter. Any other suggestions on a better way to flush the trans, or any info, suggestion would be welcome.

Does the torque converter have the drain plug in it. Drain the converter and the tranny and blow the lines out good. You can allways put the tranny fluid in a bucket and let the water settle out of it with the price of oil now a days. then transfer it it to another container as you strain it with a fine paint strainer. How did you determine it needs another pump?

don't know why you think the pump is bad. If it work for all the other applications why would it not work in OD? I doubt that there is anything wrong with the pump. On the water in the atf you have a leaking cooler in the radiator any radiator shop can fix that for you but you may have done serious damage to the transmission. Old Wrench

I don't know much about trannys. However, isn't the OD controlled by a solenoid?

I have no fluid flow in any forward gear. If I put the gear selector on the column in drive its like it shifts into neutral. I drained the water and oil out of the trans before I ever had the replacement motor firing. Purchased new radiator have spare pump from donor 98 explorer. If this does not fix it will delve into transmission farther since I have a rebuild kit I never used. I had a shop rebuild the transmission it had been sitting in the truck behind the ruined motor for about 3 1/2 years now I am trying to finish this project and get this truck back on the road.
