Auto to manual trany swap

I have a 1991 ford ranger with a 4.0 engine and im putting a manual in it. I read somewhere that you need a new computer or the motor wont run because the auto computer cant sense the torque converter. I also heard all you need is the wiring harness to the transmition. Which is correct?
