i just completed the swap from auto to manual on my ranger now i have a couple of questions about this

1) when i got the auto tcase out i took a closer look at the manual one i have and it has a electrical plug above the vent. the auto didn't have one. what is this for? here is a pic of what i am talking about: http://s445.photobucket.com/albums/q...anger tcase/

2) i noticed a faint growling noise when the front hubs are "Free" when the shifter is in the first 2 positions closest to the dash.

3) i don't have a shift knob yet what is the shift pattern of the manual 1354?

4) can i leave the front hubs locked in all the time and just shift the transfer case in when i need 4x4? am i limited to a certain speed with the front hubs locked in?

sorry for all the questions but i thought this would be the easiest place to find answers to all of my questions :icon_thumby:

1. That plug is for the dash lights. It isn't required. If you need it hooked up, do a search here as it has been discussed.

2. Did you fill the new case with fluid?

3. When the shift knob is closest to the dash it is in 2HI. The next position back is 4HI, then neutral, and then 4Lo.

yes i did fill it. so when i am not using 4x4 i put it in 2HI?

is the groaning something i should worry about or is this normal?

Did you have your hubs locked in when you heard this sound? If so, check front u-joints and drive shaft u-joints.

Check your wheel bearings too.

the noise only occurs when the front hubs are not locked in

I would check the wheel bearings.

i replaced those last year with the new rotors. i used my 4x4 all the time with the auto tcase i had (until it stoped working) and just now started making the noise when i took it out for a test drive with the manual case

So you didn't change the hubs at all when you did the swap?

And sometimes the wheel bearings and loosen and back off, had that happen a few times.

it has manual hubs on it now. it is making the same noise when the auto hubs took a dump but not as loud and coming from the underside not the front

If it is coming from the underside and not the front then perhaps the t-case is at fault, rather than the hubs.

Where did you get it?

Check the spindle bearings while you're checking the wheel bearings. The seals can wear out and the bearings will get contaminated pretty quick
