auto to 5 speed.

hey i am looking to buy a project truck. and i was just wondering, how big of a job is it to change an auto to a 5 speed? is it something i could do with help?

I did it on A 86 it wasn't to bad well worth it but 2002 would have more wiring go to pick and pull to start to get pedals,mounts linkage measurements from donors tranny length ect. and you'll have a good idea your looking at.Are you going to have to get a manual ecu a manual tranny wiring harness.I changed these things too heard it both ways on the sight but a 2002 ecu is going to wonder why the tranny isn't working right.

It's not that bad really. Biggest headache is confusing your PCM to think it's still an auto while you drive it to the dealership to reflash your new manual PCM's PATS system.

the truck i would be doing this too would be a 84 not my 2002.

On an '84 the hardest part is getting the heavy auto out.

the easiest way to install the manual pedals is to remove the steering column and pull the entire pedal support...

I know a lot of guys want to avoid taking things out, but trust
me pulling the column is the fast way to get the pedals out.
and back in.

Which trans? Hopefully a later "Mazda" manual...

SOME floor surgery wll be required, yes, there's a removeable
plate in the floor, BUT, the plate is shorter on the 1983-87's
As is the hole the plate covers.

On a 1988-up the longer plate was designed for the mazda trans.

It's all been done before and many here can help talk you through it.

And I'm here to backstop everyone else the tough questions.
