So what if I want to keep my auto hubs, is there anything I can do to improve them? Ive seen cable systems on other vehicles that lock the hubs solid, is that possible with these? Ive been fabricating my own parts on cars for years, but recently took an interest in 4x4 rbv's, so making necessary components isn't an issue, I just need some direction. :headbang:

no, there isn't anyway to improve the auto hubs.....

the cable you are thinking of is for the "central axle disconnect" that many GM and Mopars had ( they had no hubs, so was the way they "free-wheeled" the front axle )

if anyone had found a way to make the auto hubs any better would have made a mint by now..... just go get some good manual ones ( preferably Warn ):icon_thumby:

Best thing you can do is take them apart, clean and grease them real good (don't pack them with grease, everything just needs a light coating).
Then while in 4x4, never change directions real suddenly (from forward to reverse & back, etc.), as the hubs will try to unlock for a moment and then re-engage. If you're real hard on the throttle during that moment, that can damage them as well.

Getting a set of manual hubs is probably the best thing you can do for your truck.

thanks guys, next question; I have an extra front axle that has good manual hubs....can i swap these ones over to replace the autos?

The axle also has to be the same model as yours (Dana35 or Dana28).

You're good to go then :icon_thumby:
