My truck has a 5spd manuel, The fluid is starting to look dirty. the chilton book says it takes mecron auto transmission fluid. Is that right?

Yep. Mercon ATF is the correct fluid. I just changed the fluid in my 95 Ranger 4.0 5 speed this weekend and all is well.

Mercon V is the correct fluid for his application. His transmission is equipped with different syncros, plastic like.

I changed the fluid. The old stuff was black and the drain plug was covered with metal shavings. I had a hard time getting new fluid back into the tranny (long story). anyway got it done. now I'm noticing a minor leak around the plugs. what can i do to stop it.

Are you sure the leak is at the drain/fill plugs, not at the shift rail plugs at the top rear of the trans?

I looked at it this morning, still seeping out of the plugs. would Teflon tape help? There tightened alittle past hand tight.
