auto 4x4 not locking in

i have a 2000 ford ranger and when i engauge my 4x4 i hear engauge but my front hubs arent locking in does anyone know what it could be

Your Automatic hubs are shot buy a set of manual Lock outs

I thought they were live axle by 2000. Check for busted or melted vacuum lines. Theres two vacuum lines that control the diff, even though you may or may not be live axle, these busted vacuum lines will prevent you from engaging.

The live axle change was mid year in 2000. It may or may not have vacuum hubs. Sure sounds like it does though.

Sounds like the vaccum hubs are shot or have dirt in the lines/hubs. PVH is what they are called.

Ive seen them clogged with dirt/mud, along with the vaccum lines plugged. Clearing the dirt and making sure the lines have vaccum cured the problem. I would pull it apart and take a look.

Converting them to manual is easy.

Or instead of paying 150 bucks for manuals or converting your locking hubs to full time lock, you can also convert the original PVH hubs to manual without even taking them off the truck. Heres the write-up, very easy to do and you dont even have to take them off the truck.
