are these 4.56s, how to tell?

Took apart my axle last night and cleaned things up. How can I tell that these are for sure 4.56 gears. I just want to make sure before I install them.

I bought the axle off craigslist. he said it was a 94 explorer changed to 4.56s Yukon gears. Also when assembling a d35 how do I "phase" the ujoints/yokes on the axles for correct positioning.
 
count the # of teeth on the ring gear and pinion than devide, ring/pinion, but noone could tell from that, they could be 2.89s seeing as thats what it says, id also check the setup of those gears, i dont see any yellow paint, the setup could be off
 
I will count them when I get back home today. By checking the setup what do you mean? back lash and all of that technical stuff? Dont I need special tools, or is it more simple.
 
The ring gear should have the numbers stamped on it, they are the number of teeth on the ring gear and pinion, should look like this "41-10", as in 41 ring gear teeth, 10 pinion teeth, 41/10=4.10 gears.

Ill check that first. seems like a pain in the ass to count em without losing track. That and I only have two hands.
 
ya, the backlash would take specal tools or a pro but itl be worht it to not smoke the new gears
and i never knew there was #s stamped on the gears, im not all that experienced with gears
 
The 4.10s that were removed from my rear end had 4.10 stamped on the flat end of the pinion, so if you can see that far in there, that'd be an easy way to tell.
 
Yeah, just count the teeth on both the ring and pinion. You can use the calculator in the Tech Library.
 
i know there isnt on the rear axles, i admit ove never seen a d35 loaded with 4.56's. but that ring gear just looks thin.
 
as said before, the ratio is stamped in the ring gear on most if not all after market gears. an easy way to find the rate is putting a sharpie mark on a ring and count how many yoke rotations it takes to get the ring gear back to the same location.

I agree on my 4:56's(91 explorer 8.8) we had to grind one tooth down to put the cross-pin in. I am really doubtful that, that is a 4:56........(or is that the front pig?). The front ring gear I think(if I remember correctly) fits a lot better than the rear....
