I tried a key test but couldn't get any response from it. Is there a way to read codes at home w/o a 300 dollar tool? Maybe I was doing the key test wrong but like i said I got no response.

The truck runs, just not great. Trying some home diagnostics.

yes the PCM will store codes. theres a helpful write up in the tech library under "computers" on how to run self tests with little more than a paper clip.

You can get a scan tool from any of the parts places for about 25 bucks. They flash the codes and beep too.

Walmart sells them too...

this is NOT an OBDII vehicle in question. only code scanners specifically desgined to pull codes from an EEC-IV ford vehicle can do so and nothing wal-mart sells will work.

a code scanner is a waste on an EEC-IV vehicle. you can do all code reading and self tests with a paper clip. the only advantage of having any type of scan tool is later years will datalog, but only if you have an actual star tester.

Thanks for the information. I should of looked a little harder when I researched the tech pages.

(Haven't had the chance to log on for about a week.. but thanks again)

i got mine for 25 dollars at auto zone. It's easy to hook up and you can hear the beep loud and clear so you can write the codes down without looking. worth it as far as im concerned.
