Are BodyLifts Worth it?

I got my PA 3" BL off an Ebay store for like 40$. don't know what your talking about with 100 - 150$ BL's. And I think they are pretty darn good, Made removing my tranny a snap, and I have extra room around the frame rails to get stuff that I would normally have to wedge my arm up and around. Plus they give you the extra clearence for tires, for a nicer profile, I think my truck sits way better up, I would like to do a suspension lift but I would be spending upwards of 1000$ because of shipping to AK and stuff.

Don't forget the IFS guys. Suspension lifts for us will cost us out the ass. I have a Summit Racing 3 inch body lift. Works great! Maybe someday I might consider a suspension lift when I get a new DD but for kids in highschool that work at McDonalds like myself, its a great alternative to fit bigger tires! :icon_rofl:

I think every lift has its place. A body lift is practical for it's app. Suspension lifts are much better if it's flex you want. I'm just about to do a 3" BL on my rig. I don't expect to go rock crawling after I install it, I just enjoy moderate offroading and that's what a BL can enable you to do.Have fun bud.

think about it

I have a 6inch lift and clear 35x12.5 .I am putting on a body lift only
so I can clear the new 302.but don't put one on just for tire clearance .
Get some bushwhacker cut outs .that not a hack and your dad will be happy to.

wow I guess its a love hate thing lol. Ill try and post some pix for ya'll too. I guess I'm going for a body lift and my friend just got a set of 32" muds for sale so Ill see how that goes lol

well i'm late but never the less here, i am i have a first gen with a 3" body lift and i can fit 32-11.50s without rubbing and get great flex from factory springs with OUT RUBBING! FYI for the people who probly dissagree on body lifts i love it and its cheap, but i love suspention lifts too and as soon as i can afford one there will be one on my truck. i'm wanting 4-6" but motor, trany, and transfer case need to come first. (heres some flex pics)

Body lifts get a bad rap because it puts more leverage on the mounts and can cause problems later down the road.I personally wouldn't run anything over an inch body lift but some people are fine with running bigger.I've seen videos of body lifts failing but never one in person.Do what you like but if something fails blame yourself.

It puts leverage on what mounts? The frame where it bolts in? Can someone post a price for a stronger bolt? And Im sure anyone on this site in my area with a welder would be willing to reinforce the frame where the bolts would be stressing. Stress on the frame is no problem.

Explain how exactly a body lift "falls out"? Its a cylindrical bushing or tube that has the bolt mentioned above running through the middle. I guess if you dont put the nut on the other end of the bolt it might fall out. Or if you only partly unbolt it, cut the bushing down the middle and slip it around the bolt, then it might fall out.

1 inch or 3 inch, any stress will be negligable. a 12 inch body lift? yeah bad idea.

I didn't say it would fall out now did I? no.I said I've seen body lifts failing example or rollovers the bushings can't take it,another one is getting in a front end wreck the bushing will fail.I've also heard of people have the metal on their body's being tweaked and breaking through when they do enough hard wheeling.I've never seen a person with a body lift doing hard wheeling and really flexing their shit hard.I plan on running some harder trails in Colorado and Utah and I'm staying the hell away from them unless I need space for my v8.

My mistake, I misread it. I read falling, I don't know why. As far as them failing in an accident, well Of course. I can see the bolts being pulled throught the frame from an accident, but from hard core wheeling, minus the rolloveR? Just doesnt seem plausible. But that would be the reason for reinforcing the mounts. also using washers and nutz instead of the speednutz that are on teh frame. Now those I dont like at all.

Chances are a stock body mount would have failed as well. You didn't have a "control", so you have no way of tying the failure to the body lift.

Next time Todd and I go wheelin, we'll post up some vids so you can see people with body lifts wheelin and flexing hard. :icon_thumby:

Body lifts are great:

Pros:
-They are cheap
-Easy to install
-Reliable
-Allow for bigger tires which results in more frame and axle clearance
-Keeps CG lower than it would be with a suspension lift
-Makes it easier to remove the tranny and engine
-Allows you to run a doubler on BIIs and Explorers without cutting up the floor boards
-Raises the height of the engine's intake

Cons:
-A BL alone nets no additional frame clearance
-Does not improve flex

The best lift setup in my opinion is a combination of a body lift and suspension lift.
I agree when you wrench on the trans you wont be sorry, but get a commercial one ,and new rubber mounts too. If Im gonna do that much work I want the good stuff. when you do it your gonna be complaning enough as it is
