Are all 4.0L OHV's interchangeable?

Awesome, thanks guys. Now I just need to track down a cherry picker. Is it frowned upon to buy stuff from Harbor Freight, use it, then return it?

lol Just a little. For something as big as a cherry picker, it's meant to be bought, and not used as a rental. However, I am guilty of return purchases a couple of times myself, so Im a hypocrite. Just dont do it with a huge item like an engine hoist/picker.

I have a cherry picker from HF...I love it...works GREAT and have used it for 2 years now.

Check local equipment rental stores, you can rent a lift for maybe $20 or less a day.

the frame is more or less the same on a 1995-97 RANGER as on a 1988-94 Ranger
as far as engine mounts so as for "bolting it in" the motor would work.

you MIGHT need to use 90-94 mounts
(I'm not sure when ford switched to double stud motor mounts)

However NONE of the sensors on the engine except for the water temp guage sensor
and the oil level sensor will work

Even the injectors are different.

There are internal differences in the engine.
The combustion chambers are different on the 1995-up engines and that required management system changes...

Update:

Thanks to everybody who chimed in! The motor is in and runs great, it fired up on the first crank :headbang:. I used the older 90tm block, heads, lower intake manifold and fuel rail. I did have to swap the lower intake studs because the plastic '95 plenum was thicker than the '90 aluminum one.

I had to swap a few older sensors out for the newer ones because the plugs on the '95 harness were different. For example, the '95 camshaft position sensor had to be swapped over and the '90 oil level sensor was abandoned for the '95 oil pressure sensor.

Also, the motor mounts were fine. I'm not sure about extra holes in the block or whatever but the mounts on both blocks were exactly the same. :icon_thumby:

The only problem I'm having is the RPM gauge isn't working so I'm thinking maybe I damaged the crankshaft position sensor in the process. This is the one down by the crank. Correct me if I'm wrong but that is where RPM's are measured right? :dunno:

if you damaged your crank sensor the engine wouldn't run

Is the tach not working at all, or are the RPM's too low?

Not working at all. The needle just sits on the pin like the engine is off... but it's not :icon_confused:

factory tach? might be fried. See if you can have a shop do a gauge sweep (if the rangers even let you do it) that would confirm if it was a bad tach
