Are 2002 Ranger rear door latch cables compatible with 2002 Mazda B4000

The rear door latch cables for my 2002 B4000 need to be replaced. I'm having problems finding the left lower cable. Is the same cable on a 2002 Ranger cross compatible? if so does anyone have the Ford part number?

Thanks for your reply. When I look at diagrams for the Mazda and Ranger rear door latches the lower latch assembly for the Mazda looks different than the one for the Ford. The Mazda appears to be a small piece attached to a cable. The lower latch on the Ford just shows what looks like a different mechanism with no attached cable. Am I misreading the diagrams?

Those part diagram images are notorious for giving inaccurate selections. I'd say that many could have been drawn by a toddler, but that would be insulting to the toddler. (Still better than I can draw though.)

IIRC Ford, and maybe Mazda too, sell the latch and cable as assemblies, not separate units. That could explain some of the drawing differences.

Most likely you don't need to replace the cable. It is common for them to fail, but the cable is rarely broken. In their infinite wisdom Ford speed plastic ends in the cable housing/sheath. Over time those ends deteriorate and crumble to pieces causing the door to now work. The aftermarket has created replacement aluminum ends that install on your existing cable. Both cheaper and will likely last longer than new replacement cables would.

Aw, come on now. You mean to tell me that you can't tell those are clearly the same part?


Yeah, I have no idea where they come up with the artists for these parts drawings. They need to rethink it though. Compare these pictures to aircraft IPB (illustrated part breakdown) and there is a world of difference. In an aircraft IPB you'd sometimes think there is more detail in the drawing than on the part itself. That said there is no governing body like the FAA to cover automotive and manufacturers only have to support them for like 10 years (they'd like you to scrap/trade long before that).

I'd seriously take a look at the replacement cable ends before spending that kind of money on a new latch assembly.

IPB drawings have always been horrible. The best you can do is verify the part is correct by location shown and hope for the best.
