I am using a AOD trans with my 302 and edelbrock carb. I came across this very informative web post from u-tube that explains many aspects of the swap/connection.

Has anyone done this conversion and used these? i have both the accelerator cable and trans kickdown. However I have not purchased the Sonnax part yet (part 2).

Has anyone did this swap and gotten away with out using the Sonnax? I am having troubles with the free travel in the line/cable from the trans. and getting the oil pressure to drop to 35psi in N. it is locked at 45.

cheers

The TV cable/ rod on and AOD is not just kickdown, it's a critical adjustment for trans function. If it's set too tight shifts will be late and harsh, too loose and the soft shifts will destroy the transmission.

Thanks walt, fully understand the issues that the cable controls. was asking about the Sonnax piece more than the TV usage.

cheers

If you run that transmission one single time, for one single test run, with the TV cable set wrong and the pressure is too low, say goodbye to that boat anchor of a slushbox. Although, you'd be doing yourself a favor anyway.

Don't ask me how I know.. Even though I had my pressures set right and the cable adjusted to factory specs...

The stroke ratio is critical as you seem to understand.

In basic opps strategy you want a one to one ratio....butterfly shaft movement to tv shaft movement. This is after you establish resting psi at tv port... Generally I do that with a piece of cut trans line for a spacer.

There is more then one style tv bracket on the aod end. I watched the video and seen no mention of this. It can affect ratio.

Ratio is key and that is what the sonnax part does.

Making your own setup is doable for sure. But as bird 76 pointed out...in the right conditions you can fail a unit....though a properly built unit with a pump in tolerance, especially a be controls setup, won't fry during setup....or hurt it for that matter if your in the ball park.

Not sure if they are around or would have any valve bodies available...but the lentech strip terminator with auto setting eliminates tv psi...they are not cheap though. I would just use a 4r70 unless I was looking for a all mechanical setup.

I specialized in the aod for years....they can be built to brutal capacity....mine was much stronger then any c series transmission.

Thanks for the info bobby.

exactly what i was looking for. I did pick up the Sonnax arm today, and will install it and see how the ratio works out. I have read that these transmissions can be built bullet proof. thanks for that. I am guessing my mild HP build will be ample for this thing to hold. but if not i will build it up, went this way for i loved the idea of OD without a computer and running a carb. cheers.

I did make the mistake of driving this about a mile a couple weeks ago before I understood what was needed to get the ratio TV linkage hooked up. I am hoping I didn't screw it up, as it seems so bloody strong.

Thanks and will update this when i finish the set up.

If you end up dropping the pan and the fluid is still a nice, new red, but it has very small black colored particulate in the bottom of the pan, then OD is probably cooked.

ok, pulling my hair out.... next step is 3/4 mile from me is a transmission shop.... lol

I can't get the pressure to drop below 40 psi with the trans in N and playing with the set up cable.

Is there a secret to this set up? any easy way to do it?
very tempted to take to shop. Why screw around when they know the system.

cheers

bobby,

thanks for your time. called a couple shops and they are booked solid for about next 3 weeks... however, was told higher than lower is ok. But still not switching out of 1st.

i have a couple questions for you, as you seem to know these boxes well.

1. when I hooked up the TV cable at the trans, is the rod supposed to be 100% straight in line with the trans shifter linkage?
I have double checked it today, and noticed that the linkage and the TV connecting (rod) is on an angle forward to the linkage. (i will take a pic) but it looks something like this ...

\ < TV cable
| < Trans linkage

similar to that angle. if this is wrong, would it contribute to why I can't get the settings to set up?

thanks

bird, i hope i don't have to drop the pan. when this truck was built, I dropped the cab and body onto the frame as the engine and trans were built onto the frame. the trans cross member is under the oil pan and will need to come off first... not a small feat in itself. I have my fingers crossd it is all ok. cheers

I am not allowed in Canada....

Not shifting out of first is not good.

40 is better..but not being able to get sub 30 is curious. Verify gauge. Verify proper port.

They can be out of phase like that as long as they travel and max together.

May have contaminated or stuck valve.

But you may need to look at the governor..

You were manually working the TV lever I assume?

Manually? sorry I don't understand the question. Only way to pull back on the TV is from the carb hook up.

I did take a closer look at the cross member last night and figured out an easier way to unhook it if I need to take the pan off and replace the filter and oil. (which is something I should do to check it).

I will hook up a different Gauge to see if that changes the PSI readings too.

Wish I knew about all this TV stuff before I placed this trans into the build. I researched what trans would work in the build when I did it up, however didn't read anything about this setup first hand. My other choice was a FMX trans that I have sitting on a shelf in back garage, then started reading stuff about the 4speed OD. Live and learn :). The trans was working good a few years back when I bought a donour Mazda that had it in it. I bought the V8 Mazda cheap for the carb and trans, sold off the other 302 and the carcass of truck, so carb and trans were basically free :) i drove it around the yard before i tore it out and it shifted fine. it had a different style hook up for the TV setup that i had to take off the trans when I placed the Lokar stuff onto it. but no cables or rods. I can't remember where or what i did with the original things.

cheers and thanks for your help.

Hmmm.

Are you sure it wasn't a rod...had to be a cable or rod. Unless it was Bluetooth lolzz.

I manually run the tv lever and watch the gauge to know range of psi.. and that gets done in neutral....if it gets stroked to far sometimes it can hang up....if you did not do this you need to to make sure it goes to at least 30 psi.

from sitting...especially if the slip yoke was out...I have seen bugs jam up governors as well ...

With 40 psi being the minimum...I suspect working the valve body and tv lever may possibly shake it loose...not driving it....just banging rev and drive and low.

Provided you are absolutely sure it has the proper amount of fluid.

The aod is basically an fmx with od.
