I have an 1986 5.0 with aod. I followed adivise on installing the tv cable, but after 3 months of driving it , my trans went out yesterday. My buddys are pionting to the cable causing the failure. Anyone have any thoughts?

Was the cable adjusted correctly? It could be the case...We might need some more info. Was there a shift kit or anything installed? What kind of failure is it?

Thats just it, how could I tell if it was adjusted properly? no shift kit, and as far as it being bad, there is a lot of slipping.

I have the Linkage on mine with a kit (F-100) with 0 problems.Snap your neck 1 to 2.
Did it shift early or kinda late in the RPM range?
How old (miles)?
Fluid have a burnt smell?

It had a nice hard shift 1-2, and hit od at about 65mph and cruised at 70 at 2000rpm. Started sounding like a gear drive whine at 2500 and when you manualy down shift, it sounded like a spinning rachet wrench. Went to two differnt tranyy shops and no one could tell me what was wrong. It started to fail on the way home. It was severely slipping when i got home. Fluid is burned. I am having a 1970 c4 rebuilt next week for it. Should i do a pictorial and how to disassemble a ranger with a 302? lol. Tell me about this kit you have.My tranny was a rebuild years ago but under 5000 miles on it.

I used a Lokar cable and set it by referencing a pressure gauge hooked to the trans and making sure the specs were consistent with what was indicated in the instructions. Fluid looks good, trans has shifted relatively smooth (90 S/C AOD). Hard bang shifts on a stock trans in normal driving conditions would make me wonder..

I cant tell you anything about the shift kit...........it was in the truck when I bought it.
Shifts to OD around 45-50 mph.

well, today I bought a complete 5.0 / 5speed wrecked 1989 mustang for $300.00. The transplant will begin soon, thanks for everyones help on this one, Don

Thats a hell of a deal, I wish you were closer, I would want the remains...I had an 89 mustang I wrecked, well, I took and made the car into 2 pieces, ever since then I've been wanting to build an 89 in its place...
