Anyone using Mobil 1 ATF?

I want to change my tranny fluid to finish off my new clutch and slave. I heard lots of good things about Royal Purple Synchromax, but at $18 a quart up here its a bit too expensive. Has anyone used any of the Mobil 1 synthetics? If so which one? I saw on their site that there is a synthetic, and also a multi vehicle atf.
I have also read that Mercon V doesn't work too well with the older M5OD's, so I'm not sure if Mobil 1 will cause the same problems or not.
Any other synthetics I should think about? Also, would it also work in the t-case?

From what I've read, being you got a older vehicle, just stick with supertech wal-mart, type. As long as the fluid MEETS the friction requirements, I'd buy the cheapest.

What advantage would you have with synthetic transmission fluid? IMO you still need to change it at the recommended intervals to keep it flushed.(or are you one of THEM that don't change their transmission fluid until it starts slipping?)

My dad is using Mobil 1 Mercon V ATF in his M5OD, it shifts well..

I use it in my manual because of the synthetic advantages. Longer life, higher heat protection, less breakdown of the fluid.

I am changing it because I have had the vehicle less than a year, so don't know its history. Plus I live in a very cold climate, so synthetic would be an advantage. And yes, I will change it at the recommended intervals.

What year was your dads truck? The reason I ask is that on their website it said it works with Mercon V, but is recommended for Mercon. I don't want to run into the problems Mercon V in an older trans with Mercon originally had.

Ok good to know. I have used Mobil 1 synthetic engine oil before, and was pretty happy with it. My guess is that anything new will be an improvement over whats in there... even the brake fluid in the clutch was pure black, like used engine oil, before I bled it all out and replaced it. Can't wait to see what the tranny fluid is like...

So will it work in the t case too?

I have used Motorcraft ATF Mercon, Mobil 1 ATF Syn, Castrol ATF, and Royal Purple SyncroMax. Out of those I have used, I like the RP SyncroMax the best. Mobil 1 ATF Syn being the worst I have used. Motorcraft ATF Mercon and Castrol ATF felt the same when shifting.

While Mobil 1 ATF full synthetic is a good product. The thing I didn't like is the feel of the transmission every time I shifted. The shifts felt too hard to engage, but still solid. The Royal Purple SyncroMax has a more slide into gear feel with a solid engagement feel.

I use Mobil 1 ATF in my transfer cases and in the manual tranny of my son's Mustang. No issues, the Mustang shifted better afterward but it could just be that the old fluid was crap. I figure it gets cold here plus maybe the syn would be a little slicker and give an infinitesimal increase in mpg.

I keep hearing people say hou much better RP Synchromax is, i'm starting to wonder if I should just buy it. How much does an M5ODR1 take?

I'm running the redline in my truck right now, and it's pretty awesome, but it's 10 bucks a quart, so yeah.

Kinda off subject as far as vehicle type but when I got married the wife had a 2002 Honda CRV with an auto trans. She had never changed the ATF so I set about doing it since it had I think 115K mi. at the time. I was shocked that Honda's first recomended change was at 120K. And also...no filter,just a magnet on the drain plug. It took a Honda only atf fluid that I suspect is synthetic because it was also very expensive. I'm not saying I would go that long on one of my vehicles by any means but Honda is known for being reliable.

its probably right around the price of synchromax up here then. I looked online, and it said the mtl was a gear oil. Is that safe to use in my truck?

Nope - the M50D's take ATF. Post back up after you change the fluid though. I'm thinking about putting synthetic in mine too because I'm having some weird shifting issues.
