Anyone tried a resonator exhaust tip?

I've seen these at the parts store with small holes on the inside of the tip. Do they do anything at all or just for looks? I'm trying to take some of the high pitch out of my 2.3 exhaust system. If they do anything would it be a deeper tone or even worse than now?

True resonators are installed right after the muffler, a "resonator" tip wont do anything but make it look goofy.

That's kinda what I figured. I hate to have the exhaust redone. Maybe I can find a motorcycle baffle big enough to go in the end of the pipe. lol

I put one on the old Gibson system on my Sport Trac several years ago to quiet it down a bit for a trip to Florida and back. It was a little quieter but not by much.

Back in the Muscle Car Era , they were common . Notably on virtually all performance models of Mopars in late '60s , early '70s , and they did indeed do somthing . The OEM chome resonators were pretty substantial , longer than a lot of the current aftermarket ones .

Anything that creates exhaust turbulence, will do * somthing * , but indeed , everything else equal , similar resonators will do a lot more mounted closer to the mufflers, with pipe behind them .

Whether the resonators the OP is looking at will do what he wants, I dunno .

I have one of the $20 bombshells on mine from Advance.

It did slightly change the exhaust note. Seems like it made the Flowmaster FlowFX sound a little more clear and less muffled; you can make out the individual pulses of the exhaust more clearly when running/idling.

The biggest change was that I have my tune set up to cut fuel and knock timing way back to a few degrees ADC on decel. Pops and bangs from running lean on decel are much louder now.

When I roll the Hill District at night and downshift to a stop, people duck. It's hilarious.

If it's too loud, you could probably slip one of these in your pipe and do the same thing.

Or one of these auger looking baffles.

I fixed it. I V8 swapped it and it sounds much better. My 2.3 exhaust was a long tube header into a Super 10 and out in front of the right back tire so the bad sound was my fault. I just had the muffler laying around and it fit good so I used it.

It's going to be hard getting any sort of "good" sound from a 4 cyl even if you go full exhaust.... It wouldn't be worth it to do a full exhaust but you could easily replace the muffler to something that is more open. I put on a Thrush Welded muffler on mine and it sounds a lot better. Exhaust tips aren't going to do anything if you leave the factory exhaust in.

91 stranger..i beg to differ.. I have tested alot of cans on 2.3's in many years and ONE stands out... Its the twin turbo for $25 from Jones... 2in pipe.run it out the side with a chrome tip ad enjoy. if you do it right you can fit in a long 3in dia tip and that will deepen it and bein a cylindrical can it stays totally hidden inside the rail. This is the cheap way. You can do this same thing but ad in the over the axle section and that length will deppen the tone as well. do NOT use anything bigger than 2in pipe. If you understand EGV and reversion and more tech like i do, you'll understand.,bigger pipe in exhaust is NOT better..

I tried one once, it was so heavy the pipes bent when they got warm.
