Anyone stick weld?

Growing up, my father was always welding. He had a Lincoln stick welder (he cause them a buzz box). The man could build anything big or small. I never saw one of his welds break and he built stuff large and small.

It seemed like people were getting MIG's when they needed something to weld smaller guage metal.

Nowadays people are welding 1/4" with MIG's.

Does anyone use stick welders anymore?

I use them. We have about 6 of them in our high school shop. We also have a coupe oxy/acetaylene welders and 1 mig. Ive been arc welding for about 3 years now and im pretty decent at it.

I've used a few. I've used them for filling gaps or spots that would have resulted in me using 100 ft of MIG wire, and also on the inside of my rear bumper where i knew i wasn't going to clean it up and I needed it strong. Plus my buddy was getting tired of me using up all his TIG rod....

A good friend learned to weld on an ancient (Lincoln I think) stick unit where he had to smack the rod against what he was welding to get it to start the arc. What a surprise he had when he went to use a newer one

Stick was all I had until I picked up a MIG a year or so ago. I use the MIG more, mainly because of ease of use. The ARC, however, has a lot of huge advantages over the MIG, and still sees its fair share of usage.

i learned to weld with a arc, it took some time, but once i got the hang of it i got really good. i got a mig now, use it most of the time just cuse it is easyer to get out and use, found the mig way easyer to learn how to use. still use the stick for the thick metal, anything bigger than 1/4, i grab the stick.

i learned using stick and i think thats the way it should be. all the characteristics are more clear when using a stick. i then moved on to mig and now tig. you cant get me away from a tig welder nowa days.

Never got the hang of a stick, I can MIG and TIG circles around my stick welds.

thats all i got is an old lincoln stick welder from the 50's......i do plan on purchasing a mig pretty quick though for the easability.....

I still stick weld have 2 stick welders and 2 migs. they all get used but I would say the stick welders gets used more. Mainly use the stick because it is easier to use have 20 foot leads on the lincon ac/dc welder.

ive got a big ole Lincoln 250 ideal arc stick welder.. first learned to stick with that bad boy... i mostly use the stick where i know theirs going to be a lot of strength needed an ill stick anything1/4 an up .. the mig welder is nice for ease of use an if your fabricating something its easier to tac everything together . the tig welder is nice as theirs no slag or clean up..

every once in a while ill break out the big ole stick welder just to throw down a few beads here an their.

I’ve got my buddys old sears commercial 295 amp stick. And one of my roommates has a 225 Miller stick.

Have never tried tig, can mig well but most of my time is with the stick. Its what I have so its what I use.

All the fab work on my rig was done with stick.

I have an AC/DC stick, MIG, oxyacetylene and a portable MAP/O2. They all have there uses and I use all three. I started with my buddies AC stick when I was still in high school until I finally got my first stick. Since then I can't seem to stop buying toys. I'll always have a fondness for stick, it was my first forayer into fab.

same here. welding is fun in general. i dont like oxy/acetaylene though, im scared im blow something up. my shop teacher told me im a great welder but i cant weld straight

i learned on stick (lincoln 225, dont know how old, has the switch rather than the crank handle) and i also think anyone who wants to weld should learn on it. get good at arc electrode welding and tig comes natuarlly. mig is cake. in my high school ag room back in the mid-80's all we had were lincolns, but they were the real old ones with the crank on the front. dont know if they ever upgraded their equipment. if they did, i wouldnt have minded getting some of the old stuff. when i was real young mom caught me trying to use the welder, i had seen dad and decided to try. was tring to weld a cast-iron seed plate from a really old corn planter to a old licence plate, had the helmet and all. mom freaked out a bit (i was 4 or 5) dad just smiled. i ought to teach my daughter to weld. ive taught her how to shoot. (take curiosity out of the equation, too many times kids are just taught to keep away and fear the weopon) i say, know it, respect it, and be aware of it and what it will do. im not sure my daughter has even seen welding take place like i have, growing up on a farm with 30+ old machinery, you do alot of upkeep.

I can easily say I am a better stick welder than I am a mig welder. I have used more 7018 and farmers rod (6013) than wire easily. When welding buckets onto front end loaders and welding together hoppers for batch plants, stick is much better...
