lol.. I don't let Jiffy Lube touch my rigs either tho.. I've heard to many horror stories.

There are 3 people who I permit to touch my Ranger. I have had mechanics I like not do stuff right.... That said, NO shop touches my Ranger... especially a chain store... :icon_thumby:

Frankly, I get a bit anxious when I am aware that my vehicles are NOT in top shape.

I'm not into mechanics that specifically look for 600000 problems that are wrong with my car. i like how my dad puts it. this is a review he had while he had his own shop..

Unless you specifically ask for a inspection about the whole car..i don't see the point of pointing everything out that needs to be fixed. just things that you see and to not be like OMG THAT NEEDS TO BE FIXED... Unless it absolutely needs it to be fixed to either complete the repair you're doing or to make the car safe. ( Not bashing anyone by the way, everyone has their own way of doing things)
 
well most techs are paid flat rate which their paycheck is based on how much work they get done/sell. and at least at our shop you have to recommend everything you see wrong with the car to cover your ass and not have someone come back to you trying to sue you. bc if something does happen and you didnt mention it was broke..... hello lawsuit. and just bc a tech recommends everything doesnt mean it has to have it. it all depends on how the service writer presents it to the customer.
 
I learned the hard way back in the 80's bout quickie lube / walmart etc.... Now if by chance I don't have the time I know independent shops that will do it right. If you don't feel you can do it ask around. Most owner shops will do a good job because they don't have a corporate big brother to keep them in business, especially if the shop has been in business for a long time.
 
I took my old (well, it was pretty new, then) Toyota 4x4 to one of the quicky lube places once for an oil change. Next afternoon as I was leaving work I noticed a small fresh puddle under the truck. I knelt down and looked under the truck and saw a drip hanging on the drain plug. I reached under there with my finger to see if the drip was oil, and as I touched the drain plug it actually turned a little bit just from the touch of my finger. It was that loose!

I went back in and borrowed a wrench from maintenance and tightened it up, but I bet if I hadn't noticed the drain plug would have dropped out on the way home.

No more quicky lube places for me.

That's how it is at my shop. I recommend things that would fail state inspection, routine maintenance items as appropriate by Ford's published schedule or my own inspection (ie, if Ford doesn't say you should need an air filter at 41,000 miles, but you have 41,000 miles and an air filter that looks like a smoker's lung, I'm gonna try to sell you an air filter), and tire rotations. I try to sell batteries when the tester fails them or when the alternator craps out. No more, no less.


Now, to add to the fun of it, the owners just changed the rules on us at my shop. Say I work on your car. I change the oil and the air filter, but never look at the brakes because I didn't need to take the wheels off for anything. Two weeks from now your brakes start making a grinding noise and one of your pads ate the rotor. I personally get to buy you new pads and rotors and put them on for free. So at my shop, it goes beyond covering the company. It is now to the point where I have to recommend this stuff to protect myself financially. And it's all because of these stupid people who want everything for nothing and want it yesterday and want to sue you if you don't deliver but still say that the dealership is a rip off.

Now I can recommend anything I want. That does nothing to stop you the customer from saying "no thanks" and driving on down the road.

Heck, this week I had one of those (yesterday into today). Guy has his car towed in, said he lost all electrical power. I look it over, determine that the alternator died and he kept driving until the battery was so run down that it just wouldn't go anymore. I tested the wiring to cover myself, and then made my recommendations. He felt our quote was more than he wanted to put into the car (and since it was a 98 Taurus I agree) we charged the battery up for him so he could drive it home, and sent him on his merry way. But at least anything that happened after that wasn't on our heads.

That is crazy :fie:

What if junior was doing brakestands in said car and fried the rear brakes in that two week window?

We recommend stuff we find wrong and usually the customer jumps on it. In farming, when people want to run, they want to run and if they find anything that may shut them down they are eager to fix it... and in the enviroment they run it usually saves them a ton of money. We would have made a whole lot more $$ if we hadn't told a guy yesterday the hose between his air filter and turbo was cracked and wouldn't stay on the turbo... he eagerly forked over the $100 for a new hose... and he came in because his hydraulics were messed up.
