Changing rear 10" drums on 09 xlt 4x4 and this fell out when drum finally came off.

Well since the OP found his own answer, but didn't tell us what it was, for the rest of the class....
That's the self-adjuster cable. Or at least it WAS. It is supposed to have an eye on the other end and goes from the top anchor pin, around the crescent, and down to the top of the adjuster pawl.
