The long version... Apologies!
I acquired a 2005, low mileage 60k, 2.3L auto, 2wd, fleet ranger about 2 years ago. It had been used as a spill response rig for a port facility. It did have regular maintenance but was not treated well and i think it has alot of idle time.

Of course i got it for a song but it is a beater, i love it!

I have now driven it around 25k and have made many repairs and performed normal maintenance.

For the first several thousand miles it had a cold starting issue. I have it starting normal with a new set of Motorcraft injectors and a new fuel pump. I think the injectors were sticking open and flooding the engine. After the injector swap, which required pulling the intake it would ping/ spark knock under load. I was in disbelief that anything I'd done had caused the pinging, wrong!! After swapping in (wreaking yard) maf sensor and map sensor (for troubleshooting) the pinging remained. I decided to pull the intake again and found that i had pinched one of the intake O-rings and had a massive vacuum leak. At least i found it!!! Not so fast! The pinging remained.

Now I'm just throwing parts!! I have since, checked compression, perfect 175-180 on all 4, new motorcraft maf, new motorcraft map, new motorcraft egr (total PIA) and removed the cats. This entire time i have never had any CEL or codes. I have driven it many miles while trying to figure this out.

It's still pinging on any hill.

Another couple symptoms that may or may not be related.

When it's cold, under part throttle acceleration it'll just slightly surge.

And.... it takes fuel extremely slow. I've blown the vents out with compressed air. I think that there may be something screwed in the fuel fill by someone attempting to steal gas.
