What is it like? Looks like some REALLY tough work! I came to the local tire shop and they had three people, two shop workers and a shop worker/counter person.

One guy was working on a grain truck tire, beating, trying to get the wedges off, another guy was working on a large tractor tire that has a "slow leak" and the counter person came out and did all fours on my truck.

It really looks like tough work!

I know I always have weird projects for them and they do it without a thought. I use a small mom and pop place, Leonard's in Columbus, In. I don't really like their tires, but I like the people. The big chain places are very reluctant to color outside the lines--like putting tubes in a radial or putting ag tires on automotive rims.

we have a mom and pop place here too. I have gotten well aquanted with the employees because of my frequent tire changes here recently. They can get almost any tire you would be looking for and any brand. They usually charge a little more, but I can go out and watch them mount, balance, and install the tires. That also means I can talk to them so they are not board; heck, I usually wind up helping.

I am willing to pay more because I know 100% of the money stays in Charlestown.

We have a chain out here called Les Schwab. the old guy who started it believed in taking care of the customer. Those guys all run whereever they go. If I go in for my free tire rotation, it's free and in a reasonable time. All of their impact guns are turned down and they always follow that with a torque wrench.

They are SO great. =]

Its not too bad considering what kind of work you get. I've worked on tire sizes ranging from 12" rims to 38" rock crawler tires. And a few odds and ends, like bicycles tires. It really depends on the shop. I work for AAFES CarCare Center, theres really a limit to what we do. Its either we are a quick lube or a tire shop, but nothing else. For repairs, tune-ups, and rebuilds; we refer the customers to Firestone across the street.

I HATE the les schwab's around here. The price on any brake job is rediculous. My friend deiter had bigger tires installed on his tacoma trd, and without even asking him they trimmed his bumper and fenders. They CUT into HIS rig without permission. He had a brand new bumper 2 weeks earlier and they chopped right into it without asking. That is poor service. Maybe on an older, junkier vehicle, but a 01 tacoma?

As much as i agree with your sig oil.... God hates no man, he loves us all the same ;) no matter if we are mass murderers or missionaries he loves us all the same :D

Sorry bout the thread jack,

Sorry bout the thread jack,

You are right, but it sure looked good on "paper". Couldn't have said it better myself. Still can't believe that over 50% of this country could vote for such a raghead only 7 years after 9-11. Unreal.

Those tire shop boys hustle. Work isn't so hard, but rather intense. They get a lot done in a little time. We have discount tire and NTB here. Discount doesn't even have an alignment machine, WTF? I don't see how they can warrantee tires with a known bad alignment.

I work at Karmark Tire & Auto....its primarily a Tire Shop but we end up doing all sorts of stuff including engine replacements, ignition/electrical, Lift/Lowering Kits (installation only), Brakes, Chassis, Suspension, Alignments, Climate Control (Heat and A/C). You name it we do it. Except for Transmissions...thats limited.

We'll do a clutch job and we're actually getting ready to install a new transfer case on a lifted Dodge Ram Cummins Turbo Diesel. We can do Trans pan gasket/filter servicing and full Trans flushes. But thats as far into Transmissions as we go.

We end up doing all sorts of different tires. The most common is obviously car and small truck tires.... but sometimes we get in some more of the "fun" stuff. Hell, we even had a tractor parked in bay #2 for a few days while we waited for its new tires to come in. Done some tires on a Bucket Truck and a few Duallies....and we even service one of the local towing businesses.

Is it hard work? Not usually, but its pretty intense physically. The only "hard" work is the low profile tires on the huge 20"-28" rims that we get occasionally. They can be a real pain in the rear to mount/dismount properly. The biggest challenge is trying to do everything in a short time.... people dont like to wait for an hour when they're getting tires installed.

Ya Deiter was Pissed, The kid's got money. His parents bought him the tires. A couple weeks later they bought him a coilover lift kit for it. Sort of out of order.

I used to work at a shop, kind of the bitch/stock boy, but eventually moved "up" to the sorta oil change guy and tire guy. I guess they didn't trust a 16yo with that much, lol.

It wasn't too bad, except it rains a lot in Seattle so I got wet a lot. Changing tires in the parking lot in the rain sucks for $7.65/hr. Low profile tires sucked to do too, since our machine was old. Luckily we could send them across town to our other shop. I did mostly car and small SUV tires, but mounted up everything as big as the 39.5x15 TSLs one of the techs was putting on his FS Chevy. With no lift, lol.

Rain does suck. I use to live in the Puget Sound area, and when it rain, it rain all day. Here in Oklahoma, the rain comes and goes. But when it does, its like a waterfall for the next 10mins.

Some tire shops don't have alignment machines because of liablity. The shop I work at does not have one. And if anything, the miltary designers will screw it up.

i work for discount, and we dont warranty tires that are alignment worn, its not hard to see alignment wear, we let the customer know their alignment needs to be done, but mechanical issues are not covered under any tire warranty.

as far as the work, yeah its physically demanding but not too bad, i like it it keeps me in shape. the summers suck though here in las vegas when its 110* outside but hey i get paid pretty well so its worth it.
