between a 3k oil change? I have a 93 3.0 with 200k on it, i add 1 and 1/2 quarts of oil between changes, i don't run it hard. I thought it may be the pcv but i changed it and nothing changed, took off a motorcraft and put a purolator in. I removed the air duct to look at the throttle body and it was really clean, opened it up and it looks a little wet where the pcv tubing is tapped into the plinum but not bad. Is this normal? Maybe time for a little thicker oil ar an additive. I never see any smoke and spark plugs look good, no sign of burning oil, and it is parked in a garage and no leaks on floor. I have had this truck for 11 years and i have always had to add a quart between changes but now 1/2 more oil.:icon_confused: Anyway just thought i would ask.
At 200k maybe i should just be thankful thats all it is.:D
Thanks

well, shes a old engine. i have 206000 on my 99 ranger and i burn a quart every oil change too. BUT, i also run Mobil1 synthetic high mileage formula. 5000 between oil changes and i drive like a total a$$ from time to time...i hate commuting...also, i don't think it would make a difference if your motor was flex-fuel or not either. my motor runs clean, no drips, clean plugs, just burns a little and i believe that it is to be expected. some motors use oil and others don't. and just for the record, i run 10w30 in the truck, i know it recommeds 5w, but thats what i do. just my .02!

Ford says that burning up to a quart per 1000 miles is perfectly normal, even for a new engine. I think that's just damn crazy, but 1 quart every 3k miles is nothing to worry about. Occasionally I have to add about 1/2 qt between oil changes and I have 141k. I expect the engine to make it well past 200k. I would definitely not add any kind of additive to the engine, and I also would not use a thicker oil. Just keep doing what you're doing and keep an eye on the level.

Well...losing SOME oil at that mileage isn't abnormal at all. You must realize that you are adding 1 qt of oil about every 3 months. Oil vapors can get sent into the intake, rings begin to wear a bit, stem seal wear. If it runs good, don't worry. Drive her til she dies.

my '93 burns some...just how much depends on how much work the truck does between oil changes. back when it was my daily driver, i was barely using 1 qt. now that it only gets driven when i need to tow or haul something, its up to just under 2...still acceptable for a 130k engine IMO.

thats not bad at all i know trucks with a lot less miles burn more then that. My truck has 127000 and i put 1 1/2 to 2 quarts every 5000 miles.

I always had to add 1.5-2 qts between oil changes in my old 3.0. Burned it since the day it was new. There was never any evidence of where it was going either. Plugs were clean, valves and heads were clean, exhaust was clean...

most likely burning it. it takes a suprising amount of oil to foul plugs or make the exhaust visible.

Thanks, when i bought the truck it had 55k on it and i have always had to add some oil between changes, i forgot about ford saying a quart every 1000k was normal, that doesn't seem normal to me. This thing really runs good so i'll just keep an eye on it and keep on truckin.:3gears: Thanks again:D

mine burns/loses about 1 qt. right before i do an oil change (about 3k miles) so im not worried about it...
it smokes when cold too but i dont think thats an oil issue because it does'nt smell like oil(or even coolant).

My old '91 with 240,000 MI burned a little over a quart between 4000 MI oil changes, my old '02 Ranger with 117,000 MI burned about a half quart between changes. I don't remember my '95 Taurus with 114,000 on her burning any oil, but then again I only drove it for 4000 before she went through 2 tranny's and I junked it.

200K and youre worried about a qt and a half? wow

My 95 has 122k....

Also have to add about a quart to a quart and a half every 5,000 miles . so the trend continues. Seems normal...then...

my 4.0 ohv doesnt use any between oil changes(every 5k)

but our ranger used around a qt every 3k and its got 105k on her.
