Anyone do the Explorer OHC mod?

are the lamp and mode buttons supposed to light up when headlights are turned on or is that wire just for dimming purposing? on mine, when turning on the lights, it washes the digital display out.

The '91 has this mod, I can't ask the guy that wired it but I can check this weekend when I see it again.

I'm not sure how many variations of the console exist. Below, is the wiring diagram from a 96 Explorer. Since it has a connection for instrument illumination, I would assume the buttons light up and dim the same as the rest of the instrument panel. I wouldn't expect it to wash out the display. Unfortunately, this does not show exactly how the microprocessor is programmed. But there are actually 4 separate power inputs to this module.

I opened up the circuit board and you see the three red buttons for the lamps and mode. I don’t see any lightbulbs there. Do you?

That board looks very similar to the one that was in my '02 F-150. It only had one button and it did not light up.

So, when you say this, which lights do you turn on that wash out the display? The headlights? The map lights or dome light? And what do you mean by "washing out the display"? Do you mean that the display backlight gets so bright that you can't read the display? Or do you mean that other ambient lighting makes it hard to see the display, as if its backlight isn't bright enough?

Autodimming mirror is very under rated, that was super nice when I was road tripping in my '85.
