In an effort to cut back my expenses I'm considering selling my Ranger and buying a 1996-2000 Civic EX coupe. I can only make sense out of it if the insurance is cheaper on the Civic. I'd sell the Ranger for what I owe on it and buy the civic for less than $6k and take out a 2 year loan on it and try to pay it off in 18 months. I know the gas and tires would be cheaper but insurance would need to be cheaper too for me to make sense out of it.

My Ranger is a 2003 4.0L 4x4 5 speed manual supercab with about 80,000 miles. I'm 21 and married if that makes a difference. Anybody have any insight as to why I should or shouldn't do it? I don't really want to get rid of my Ranger but it's a gas hog, I don't use it as a truck much and we are considering moving further from work.

problem is that it's going to cost more no matter which way you decide. it's costing more because your finance company is probably forcing you to carry more insurance on it than it is worth. any vehicle over 5 years old and i get the state minimum requirements. any more than that is wasting my money as i'd find it cheaper to replace it than fix it. so all the comprehensive coverage and whatever deductible your most likely carrying is what is costing you.

I understand comprehensive insurance is expensive but which vehicle would be cheaper to insure?

talk to your insurance agent, they should be able to at least give you a rough idea. i would assume it would cost less since the car will be older and worth less, but you can never be sure

Snomaker is right to a point. Generally older smaller cars are cheaper to insure because of a lower cost of parts/repairs/replacement. SOME companies however will figure in how likely you are to survive a crash with serious injuries, the less likely you are to survive or to be seriously injured the less it costs. Why do you think motorcycle insurance is so cheap, they don't expect you to survive.

too bad my wife doesnt get on TRS, she works for an insurance company

I bought one of those Focuses the ZX3 to commute to work 145 horse power and they considered it a sports car insurance was real high.Never get a car without knowing the insurance cost if you call the insurance have a couple options lined up at once that can help. The car your looking at is a target for thieves so you should at least check insurance.

AND don't just go with your current agent. Shop around & get quotes. If someone offers a better deal let your current agent know. They may match the price. Insurance is like retail competitors. They want your business they'll try and keep it.
