Jumped into my 01 after work today and the key wouldn't turn. I messed with it quite a bit and couldn't get it to budge. Using some very basic tools that I happened to have on me, I was able to remove the lock cylinder completely, and eventually free it up enough to turn the truck on when it was reinstalled. There's a little spring loaded tab/detent near the bottom of the cylinder that can be pushed in while turning it to free it up.

Replacing the lock cylinder is the easy button, but then I'd have separate keys for the ignition and door locks which I'd like to avoid. I'm also not sure if a replacement ignition key would even work on my 01 since it looks like it has a security chip on the bottom of the column directly under the key switch. Anybody ever repaired a lock cylinder successfully? I think I'll give it a try on my next day off.

Until then, I drive the racetruck to work :3gears::3gears:

if the pins get gummed up they won't retract. acts like the wrong key is being attempted.

let me re-phrase that:

if the pins get gummed up they will stay pushed back as far as the largest bump on the key, will not spring back and follow the contour.

Not on the ranger, but my wife's Saturn. New lock, rekeyed in my kitchen. Not too hard to do

you could just remove the lock cylinder from truck and take to a locksmith to be rekeyed i would also have them check your key for wear . you could also lubricate the lock cylinder. www.triflowlubricants.com

i believe you can get it at ace hardware

Id just try and clean up the lock cyclinder as long as there's no sensors in it to get ruined. Ya know little blaster wd-40 mix or sumthin sit in a coffee can for a day or so. Little air compressor action on it. Whatevers clever

Good subject. The Rat's key barely works. The Rat sits a lot. How much of a chore is R+Ring the cylinder? I just did a Schlage dead bolt and I've re- keyed a BMW core. I like the idea of giving the cylinder a bath in a can of cleaner then a little oil. Are there any plastic bits that will get eaten by a solvent? TIA :D

No plastic bits to harm just remove and clean with brake clean and lubricate with either tri-flow or a silicone spray lubricant NOT Wd40.. then reinstall
