I picked up another project, for practically nothing, to work on over the winter, here's the rundown:
1990 Kawasaki zx6 that has been sitting for about a year & 1/2, I know it ran when it was parked & that the motor is not locked up. I haven't tried to start it because it has gas in the oil, I am assuming it is a carb. issue due to sitting for so long. I have stripped it down to the carbs & drained the oil but that is as far as I have gotten.

Anybody familiar with these bikes? I have done work on early 80's Suzuki's, but despite some similarities, this bike is a whole other animal.....:icon_confused: I know it looks rough, but in all actuality it is mostly cosmetic...:icon_cheers:

I'd thoroughly rebuild the carbs and make sure the petcock isn't leaking fuel. Even if the needle and seat don't seal, fuel normally shouldn't be able to refill the float bowls unless there's a vacuum supply to the tank (or it's left on prime).

Sounds like a fun project. Hope you can come up with a cheap solution to the exhaust and seat.

I appreciate it man, that is where I was planning on starting. I have it down to the carbs & they are coming off next to get rebuilt. I have to figure out the tank issue also as it still has some fuel in it & I'm sure it's corroded inside.

The P.O. has installed some sort of valve between the tank & the carbs that has 3 positions, I am assuming this is used as the petcock as it doesn't have one on the tank itself. It only has hoses hooked to the actual tank with no place for an actual petcock to mount, I am assuming it carried an inline valve but I will have to do some research on that.

I'm not too worried 'bout the seat & exhaust, I have someone to do the seat for cheap & the 4 into 1 is in acceptable shape except for the "trumpet horn" tip on it with no baffle, I will just have to shell out some dough for an aftermarket can. My main concern is finding & being able to afford the front assembly, ie...the gauges, headlight, windshield, & front fairing panels. :shok:

It's definitely going to be a fun project, but if it's too easy it's no fun anyway!!!:icon_twisted:

If you go to RonAyers.com you can look up all the factory parts diagrams for the bike. I can see the petcock but am actually having trouble seeing where it mounts.

There are various acids and treatments you can use to clean out the tank. Once you're done, POR makes an excellent liner material that has better reviews than Kreem.

If you were closer I'd offer to loan you my ultrasonic cleaner for the carbs. It works wonders on the passages that are hard to reach by hand. I've also got a Morgan Carbtune for syncing them when you're done.

I appreciate all the advice brother!! That is a very helpful website, seems they have everything I am going to possibly need!! :headbang: It's gonna be a slow project but I will get 'er done.....I wish you were closer also, I know I could definitely use your help.....:icon_twisted:
