I made a post a long time ago on my engine sound making a whirring windy sound. I installed a new fan clutch and a new belt and the problem still persists. So I made a little video to help make my problem a little more easier for people to understand and maybe find a solution on whats up. Maybe it's suppose to sound like this but I've never really seen/heard a 94 V6 3.0L ranger in my area

Pull the Serpentine belt and wiggle the water pump shaft. If it moves about then the pumps going bad. It could also be a bearing in the alternator.

Did you put an aftermarket fan clutch in? Some of the one's from autozone will cause that noise. I know from experience.

it is an aftermarket fan clutch but when I had the fan clutch off and the belt off it still made that sound. But I'm going to see if its the pump.

If you could get an auto. stethiscope I would suggest it. They work great for helping to figure out what is making the noise.

ZigZag, if you started the engine withthe belt off and still had noise then it is not the pump (pump is turned by belt), or any other pulley driven unit (powersteering, Alternator, idler pullies Etc.) is the nosie sound as if it is coming more from the passenger side back toward the trans, almost as if is coming from under the truck? This is also a sign of SYNCRO Failure. Remember that little b@$t@rd spins and if the sensor is making contact with the inside then you very close to catistrophic failure (syncro failure = cam gear shear = oil starvation & the Outcome is NEW engine).

thats what i was thinking when i read the title of this post, the cam syncro is a very common failure for the 3.0l and will cause a wounded squirrel chirp sound. but on a 1994 it should still have a distributor with the cap and rotor and whole shebang, so maybe it is something inside the distributor since you said you removed the belt and the sound was still there?

if it was something that big should I have gotten a code or something? Cause my check engine light has never been on since I got it and I couldn't really tell where the sound was coming from. Seems like it's just loud everywhere not just one place. I replaced the distributor cap and wires/spark plugs about a week ago and it made a difference in the engine but not the sound..man this is making me mad.

If you still have the old cap look inside it and see if the rotor was hitting the cap itself. Or look inside the new one for the same thing.
With the belt off all that could make that sound would be the timing chain or the dist or the oil pump.. ( I think!)
I'd be very afraid of that noise..
One other thing you could do is to take the cap off and turn the engine back and forth by hand to see if the rotor moves back and forth with the crankshaft.. If there is a delay in movement you could well need a new chain and gears.

ZIGZAG, sorry I missed that you have an older 3.0, with cap and rotor. You do not have a Syncro. I would get an automotive stethascope and listen, or get someone who would know what to listen to.

Luckily my friend had an automotive stethoscope and we used it but still couldn't really figure out where it was directly coming from. It's just loud all over the engine, like whatever it is is bolted on the engine and making it hard to pin point the location. I think I'm going to get a new distributor and see if that's the problem but I'll take the cap off and check out the timing. God I hope this is an easy fix, I don't want to shell out all this money I don't have to fix the engine lol.

It could very well be the distributor. Even though there's no
cam synchro, the distributor has bushings too just like the synchro,
and the bushings could make noise if they run dry of lube.

For instance, Jeep 4.0s' have a history of squeaking distributors,
for the same reason, dry bushings......

So I had my truck at the dealers to get it checked out and 475 dollars later this is what they said..

"Removed trans and found throw out bearing and input shaft bearings ok, traced noise to back of block, found distributor and oil pump drives whining. Cam bushings worn. Needs new Oil pump and distributor drive removed inspected repaired., but we may still need new longblock if cam bushings are worn severely. cannot tell until tear down of engine completed."

So for everything they want about 8 grand..and that's with labor. So after a long talk with my parents (Still in college and living with them haha) we have decided that I'm just gonna run with it like this till next summer then when I save up the money I'm gonna just buy a new car, and have this as a project truck and fix it when I have the time. With me working a job (trying to get a second) and going to school I don't have the time to fix this or the money, and I'm not paying 8 grand for a a dealership to do this when my dad and I can do this ourselves. I know it's not good for all this to keep running but who knows how long the truck has had this problem and I really don't have any other option. Luckily I drive a motorcycle as my DD till winter, so looks like I'm gonna have to take it easy on the truck and use it just for the winter. Thanks everyone for all the help, definitely kept my dad and I on our toes to try to find the problem
