hi guys i am looking for a junk yard motor to rebuild to replace the one in my truck now of course its a 2.9 my truck is a 1990 ranger i found 2 motors today 1 is a 1988 2.9 and the other is a 1990 can any one tell me if their is any differance between the 2 years which one is better thanks

No difference between those two years. Both will likely have the lighter head castings. If you are rebuilding a j/y motor yourself, definately have the heads checked at a machine shop.

since you will have the motor out anyways why not swap a 4.0L and get rid of all the head aches.

+1 A 4.0 swap isn't too difficult on 1990, and you could probably find a donor Explorer or Ranger for fairly cheap. I don't know what they charge for 2.9s at wrecking yards near you, but at the closest one to me, it's $250. :shok: I'd never pay that for a questionable 2.9.

The only problem with swapping in a 4.0, (I would not hesitate to do so) is that unless he already has an M5OD in his truck, he will also be tranny shopping..........

thanks for the info guys the reason for the j/r motor is the 1 in my truck dose not have much life in it so i figured i just try to find a motor and rebuild it and yes i will have all the machine work done .inow the 4.0 is a good swap but this truck is my daily driver for now i just want a quick swap for now i found a j/r with 3 motors i can get for a 150.00

$150 is cheap enough to replace them "as they die." :D But I can see how you wouldn't want to have to do this on a frequent basis, either way, rebuilding an engine is generally expensive.

psychopete yea i am just getting one motor rebuilding it and thats all i hope this truck is my just to work truck for now at least for 1 more year when i get a new one i am planing to put a 302 in then thats why i am just sticking with the 2.9 for now i just want to keep it simple .
